St. Louis Cardinals to hire bench coach Oliver Marmol, 35, as next manager, sources say

The St. Louis Cardinals plan to hire Oliver Marmol as their new manager, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Sunday night, confirming an earlier report.

Marmol, 35, served as St. Louis’ bench coach last season and is extremely well regarded within the organization. He was the favorite from the start of the search.

Despite a team-record 17-game winning streak that carried St. Louis to an MLB wild-card berth, Mike Shildt was fired as manager earlier this month.

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak cited “philosophical differences” to explain Shildt’s dismissal. He declined to expand on those differences, saying the move was “something that popped up recently.”

Any relation to Carlos?

Plug and Play. This will be Mo’s last manager unless he gets them back to World Series. Odd that he would entrust his job to a 35 year old guy with no managing experience that no one has ever heard of. I always feel like you lose a year when you hire a manager with no experience. They may turn out ok, but most struggle right off the bat.

I assume the new manager hires a veteran bench coach.

a Marmol-aide, as it were.

I think this is a good hire.

I don't think so. Carlos was born in and signed out of the Dominican Republic. Oli (his preferred name), 4 years younger, was born and grew up in Orlando FL.

This makes at least two managers younger than me (Baldelli). GMs have been getting younger and younger, but bench managers are still mostly the domain of older guys.

The Athletic called him the first Cardinal manager of color since 1940. Good lord, they are generally pretty good but this is lame. Just because interim manager Mike Gonzalez was from Cuba, doesn’t make him of color. Looking at his picture, he looks as white as me, which is WHITE.

they are damned if they do, damned if they don't. Calling white Puerto Ricans and Cubans people "of color" doesn't make sense, but we lack the language for a category that includes Latinos with Blacks, Asians, Natives, and Pacific Islanders.
