Steve Cohen hiring Sandy Alderson as Mets team president

Steve Cohen went back to the future by announcing his intentions to hire Sandy Alderson as team president if he is approved as Mets owner. That could help Cohen’s ownership candidacy and bode poorly for Brodie Van Wagenen’s job security.

If I am fortunate enough to be approved by Major League Baseball as the next owner of this iconic franchise, Sandy Alderson will become president of the New York Mets and will oversee all Mets baseball and business operations,” Cohen said in a statement.

“Sandy is an accomplished and respected baseball executive who shares my philosophy of building an organization and a team the right way. I am excited to have Sandy in a key leadership role with the Mets if my purchase of the team is approved. Lets’ Go Mets!”

It's weird to bring back Alderson, but they could obviously do far worse. (I am looking at you, Brody Van Wagenen).

What is the opinion of the job BVW has done?

It's very negative.

The Cano/Diaz trade is seen as a disaster, and he's generally drained the farm system of high-level talent; the trade for Stroman looked ok at the time (though the price was high), but they've gotten next to nothing from him; letting Wheeler walk and replacing him with Porcello and Wacha sucked; most of his other significant signings have turned out bad (Lowrie, Betances, Familia). His relative successes have been trivial (JD Davis, Justin Wilson).

I'm probably missing some things.

JD Davis has not been trivial.

Cano also has had a strong season and EDiaz has slain some of his demons - not that I'd endorse the trade, still, but it's gone from like a 9 to an 8 on the disaster scale (assuming Kelenic pans out as expected).

JD Davis has 1 bWAR but 2.9 fWAR with the Mets over a season and a third. Depending on which stat you prefer, he's been either trivial or minor.

BVW is the perfect GM for a Wilpon-owned organization. From the moment he dared the NL East to "Come get us" through his damning with faint praise vote of confidence of Mickey Callaway through issuing a release that Yoenis Cespedes had left the team before confirming Cespedes's personal safety, this really has been something special.

Having both Wilpons send out press releases bashing him while misspelling his name ought to earn BVM Hall of Fame consideration.

How old is Sandy Alderson at this point?

72 years old. Pulls a Gillick?

Pulls a Gillick?

I thought “pulling a Gillick” was walking away from a winning team just as the house of cards was ready to collapse and sticking your successor with a protracted and unpleasant rebuild?

An assessment of BVW's poor decision to let Wheeler walk, from our sometimes poster Brian Joura.

I usually read his blog posts. They tend to be pretty meaty, but accessable.
