Struggling Diamondbacks ‘part ways’ with hitting coaches Darnell Coles, Eric Hinske

The Diamondbacks have fired hitting coach Darnell Coles and his assistant, Eric Hinske, the first significant changes the club has made as its losing skid stretches into its sixth week.

The team announced on Thursday afternoon that it had “parted ways” with the two coaches. They will be replaced by Triple-A Reno hitting coach Rick Short and major-league run-prevention coordinator Drew Hedman, who had been a sort of third hitting coach alongside Coles and Hinske.

The Diamondbacks are 5-30 since May 4, a stretch in which they are hitting .223/.290/.341 as a team. Their .631 OPS during that span is the worst mark in the majors.

The Diamondbacks have lost a franchise record 19 consecutive road games, the fourth-longest streak in baseball history. They have lost 21 of 23 games overall.

Coles and Hinske were in their third seasons in their respective positions.

Darnell Coles as a hitting coach is an entertaining notion and hitting/pitching coaches are always the first to go but ...

If anything is going right on the DBacks, it's offense. They're 8th in R, 10th in R/G. Obviously a hitter's park but that's hardly atrocious. And look at some of these OPS+: Carson Kelly 135; Pavin Smith 115; Ketel Marte 164. Those are the young hitters in AZ. Vets Escobar, Asdrubal, Reddick and Calhoun (the latter two before hitting the IL) were doing fine and 27-yo Josh Rojas is doing just fine. Nick Ahmed can't hit, David Peralta maybe has started hitting the wall at 33 (or not). There's no hitter on the roster under 26 other than Smith (25) so it's not like they're screwing up any kids.

DBacks hitting coach should have been a pretty straightforward job description this year -- help Kelly and Marte improve or at least don't mess them up and it would be nice if you we had a late-bloomer or two. Kelly and Marte are doing great, Smith is doing fine, Rojas is doing fine. What more did they want? (To be clear, I had never heard of Pavin Smith or Josh Rojas until yesterday when I popped into the DBacks page after Howie(?) posted how terrible they've been lately and expecting to find a bloodbath of OPS+.)

So that's what Eric Hinske has been up to. Huh.

major-league run-prevention coordinator

Didn't this used to be called a "pitching coach"?

Can't spell Hinske without a K.

What does parted ways mean? Is that when the team is changing planes and the manager aisles up to those two and says, “I think your plane is leaving from terminal b and ours is leaving from terminal c. Have a safe trip”

So I guess these guys must have been Lovullo hires. They were doing fine at their jobs so it must have been a shot across the bow at Lovullo to get his act together. Why don’t they just fire him?

It was Lovullo’s call to fire them.

Thursday, Hazen was asked if the decision on Lovullo is one that he would wait to make until after the season is over.

“That would be my hope,” he said. “Yeah.”

Sounds to me like the D-backs pointed a gun at him and said “it’s either them or you”

Shouldn't the quotes be around "hitting coaches" in that headline?

Duke, I was on the Zoom call with Hazen and Lovullo, and asked him directly about this. There was no ambiguity.

Listen to the full audio at the bottom of the audio in the link I gave you.

Just realized I messed up the link in my comment above

Mike Hazen’s oversight of Torey’s decision making process: “I told Torey this is his decision to make. Certainly we have conversations amongst the groups of us about the way things are unfolding. Ultimately I think it’s his call to do the best he can to maximize the performance on the field.
