Twins’ Tyler Mahle to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Twins pitcher Tyler Mahle will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery after an MRI showed issues with the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.

He said the elbow reconstruction surgery will be done in the next two weeks. He plans to do rehab back home in Orange, California.

The 28-year-old Mahle, was pulled from his start on April 27 after showing diminished velocity. He expressed optimism after the game and said he didn’t expect to miss time, but he was later diagnosed with a posterior impingement and flexor pronator strain before more testing.

Doubly sucks in that he will be FA at the end of the year. So some good news, it's the all-Tyler team

C Flowers or Stephenson ... career vs peak (the "T" in JT Realmuto is Tyler)
1B France
2B Wade
SS Saladino
3B Greene
OF O'Neill, Naquin, Colvin
SP Glasnow, Mahle, Chatwood, Anderson, Skaggs
RP Clippard, Lyons, Matzek, Walker, Thornburgh, etc.

Obligatory 20th ceentury rep: Tyler Green, SP, made the AS team in his rookie year but was not good and got hurt.

Twins’ Tyler Mahle to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery

Also, the Tommy's Twins Mahle will undergo Tyler John surgery, and the Tyler's Tommy Mahle will undergo Twins John surgery. (Can you prove it didn't happen? God help us all in the future!)

Arm Injuries Have Increased, and It Might Be the Pitch Clock’s Fault

Back to back articles on pitcher injuries makes this as good a place as any to link.

I wish that link weren't behind a full paywall, or else I'd FP it.

I would have guessed this site would have a much higher than normal rate of BP subscribers.

But I'm not one of them! I used to be, but am no longer. I can't pull quotes. Someone else could do it, or you can feed me!

“Hey Derek, I’m looking at the Injury List Ledger and I just need to confirm I’m reading it correctly. Pain Points shows there have already been WAY more elbow and shoulder injuries in 2023 than in any other season. That can’t be right, can it? I hope it’s not right.”

That was my message to Derek Rhoads, BP’s data dude in charge of the Injury List Ledger. I couldn’t possibly be correct because the consequences would be too awful. I wanted to be wrong. I would have gladly chosen some other topic to write about.

I wasn’t wrong. Derek replied, “Unfortunately absolutely correct. Elbows and shoulders have been up pretty substantially.”

There's the intro. And while there is no unimpeachable evidence that the pitch clock is causing this, the conclusion is that there was an "abrupt shock due to some other change" and well, what other change could it be?

And while I quote words behind a paywall, let me be adamant that BP is worth the subscription.

BP used to put one or two articles a week out in the yard for passersby to read, and almost always for their real ground-breakers. But I haven't seen anything free in English in quite a while. I used to subscribe, but at one point they went through a dry spell just as the kids' tuitions reared up so I dropped them. Hard to justify going back without any samples at all.

The Reds have to be pretty happy with how the trade is working out. Encarnacion-Strand has no idea where the strike zone is, but it's still hard to argue with a slugging percentage above 700. I've got to assume that the plan is for him to take over from Votto as the Reds' first baseman of the future. Steer is already a decent big leaguer. Not a star, but he'll do. Hajjar has already been sent to Cleveland and appears to be injured now. That Mahle got injured doesn't mean that it was a good deal at the time (although it may well have been), but it is sure working out nicely.
