Why the Rockies hired Sterling Monfort as one of the majors’ youngest pro scouting directors

“It’s not like he was given this opportunity because of who he was (in relation to Dick) — it’s because he was the right person to get the opportunity, period,” Rosenthal said. “Like the old saying in baseball goes, ‘You can’t trick scouts.’ He did it the right way, in their eyes.

“He cut his teeth, he worked his butt off, he scouted across the country, he came early and he stayed late. Schmidt and our guys truly believe in him as an evaluator.”

A graduate of Eaton High School, where he won two Class 3A state titles, and Arizona State University, where he played club ball, Monfort worked on the Coors Field grounds crew while in college. He began his baseball career as a coaching intern with the rookie-league Grand Junction Rockies in 2013.

From there, he got into scouting. He stepped in as the team’s full-time area scout for northern California in 2019 when the Rockies were left scrambling to fill that opening shortly before the season. The same thing happened in 2020 in southern California, a post he held for two years before getting his last promotion, which also involves scouting the Rockies and the Padres organizations.

It’s been a fast rise for Monfort, who has a reserved, thoughtful demeanor. He leans on the expertise of the scouts around him, but as Montgomery explains, “when he talks, he talks with substance.”

Rockies being Rockies.

"The scouts all agree that he's the best choice for the job if they are only going to consider one the Monfort kids."

Why the Rockies hired Sterling Monfort as...
I don't think one needs to read the rest of the sentence.

“It’s not like he was given this opportunity because of who he was (in relation to Dick) — it’s because

of who he was in relation to his mother."

Sterling even has his very own page at baseball-reference, being a 47th round draft pick of (who else?) the Rockies in 2009, but no playing record because apparently he didn't sign. Probably couldn't afford the pay cut.

Am I too cynical, or is that not an old saying in baseball?

I feel for Clinton McKinney, taken by the Rox after the kid who played club ball at Arizona State.

Never heard it before. It would be an odd one because scouts are wrong all the time.

This guy was also drafted in the 47th round in 2009. He's had an interesting career: pitched three years in the White Sox org, released, played independent ball, signed with the Yankees, played AA and AAA ball, went overseas to Taiwan and Australia...and he's still active, pitching for the Rakuten Monkeys of the CPBL!

Some reporter put his name to this press release.

The reporter was Chad Monfort.

Does he have to kick 10% up to "the big guy"?

Unfortunate that the excerpt didn’t include the listing of all the great Rockies players & prospects signed on Monfort’s recommendation that must have been included in the article. Unless . . .

You can't fool scouts: they know to check out the parents.

this was every bit as hilarious as I hoped it would be.

Longtime Knicks and Rangers owner Jim Dolan is the son of Charles Dolan, the visionary who not only created HBO but arguably the entire concept that people would pay extra money for quality programming on this new cable TV idea.

I have met Jim Dolan - and he is no Charles Dolan.

so even more brilliant minds often wind up with dullards for offspring.

‘You can’t trick scouts.’

If I've ever heard it before, it didn't stick. I suspect it is close to true in that you can't trick a scout into thinking you know and can evaluate scout-y type stuff when you can't (i.e. they can spot a fraud scout). But scouts also know there are only 30 possible employers out there so if a reporter asks "what do you think of Sterling Monfort's scouting acumen?" you say he's proven whether you believe it or not.

And seriously -- you're rich and you're gonna name your son Sterling? Might as well be a Rodney Dangerfield movie.

he is quite literally the son of a "Dick."

he's probably not complaining

RE post 8: and think how much money the Rockies saved by not having to scout their choice in the round! They sure pulled one over on ol' Reinsdorf....
