HOW WILL THE RED SOX LOSE TODAY?!

Elvis Andrus' 302nd double ties him on the all-time list (452nd place) with numerous other guys: some sluggers (Bobby Bonds, Carlos Gonzalez), some shortstops who played forever (Chris Speier), and some both (Jose Valentin).

What happened to Jeff McNeil and why is Billy Hamilton pinch-hitting for him in the first inning?
   4. JJ1986 Posted: August 13, 2020 at 01:42 PM (#5969428)
McNeil injured himself (knee, I think) running into the wall to make a good catch in the top of the inning.
   5. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 13, 2020 at 01:43 PM (#5969429)
McNeil banged into the outfield wall at pretty good speed catching a fly ball. Very good play, but he hit his knee rather hard. Stood up, but couldn’t really walk, and needed to be carted off. The wall is padded, but there might have been a pole or hard surface behind the padding.

Ron Darling, after Hamilton's 12-pitch at bat, told a story about his first time facing Pat Listach, the 1992 AL Rookie of the Year with the Brewers. Darling said that Listach led off the game against him with a 14-pitch ab that ended with a single.

Darling is generally right but is conflating two ABs. The first time he faced Listach, as a starter with the A's on June 10, 1992, Darling did allow a single, but it was on the 7th pitch of the at bat---not the 14th. Then later that season, on Sep. 26, Listach led off the game against Darling by drawing a walk on the 17th pitch. Which is, to me, more impressive than getting a single on the 14th pitch.

Cardinals had at least one more positive test sometime this week - sounds like a coach - and their game tomorrow against the White Sox has been postponed (twitter tracking also shows their flight to Chicago was cancelled, so they're still in StL); may have a doubleheader Saturday, but that seems like just hopeful thinking to me. The Cards are scheduled to play the Cubs against after the Sox, in Chicago.

   8. JJ1986 Posted: August 13, 2020 at 01:57 PM (#5969436)
It must be difficult, but at some point don't you have to just have the Cardinals run a full 28-man taxi squad out there and leave the original roster and coaches in quarantine?
   9. Misirlou cut his hair and moved to Rome Posted: August 13, 2020 at 02:00 PM (#5969438)
One would think.
   10. puck Posted: August 13, 2020 at 02:09 PM (#5969440)
Shouldn't MLB have had different 40 man rules for this season? Isolate the members of the 60 man who are not on the active roster, then allow them to be swapped in in large numbers.

Or, is the concern that StL would swap in 28 players and have a coach or staff infect the new guys.

Warnings issued after the Mets hit Juan Soto, who homered 3 times in the series for the Nationals.
   12. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 13, 2020 at 03:19 PM (#5969452)
Juan Soto hits his 4th HR of the series against the Mets, and slowly trots around the bases.
   13. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 13, 2020 at 03:48 PM (#5969456)
With that HR, the 61st of Soto’s career, he moved past Ken Griffey, Jr. for 8th place on the Age-21 Leaderboard, in more than 600 fewer PA.
   14. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 13, 2020 at 05:09 PM (#5969472)
Just a ‘bruise’ for Jeff McNeil, who’s not expected to need a trip to the IL. Sure looked worse, but who would doubt the Mets medical staff?
   15. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 13, 2020 at 05:35 PM (#5969474)
We have the second drone delay of the season in Boston.
   16. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 13, 2020 at 05:36 PM (#5969475)
Drone delay at Fenway.

EDIT: Aerial-delivered beverage dispatched.

Double in first PA for Phils #1 position prospect Alec Bohm.

Double in first PA for Phils #1 position prospect Alec Bohm.
Oh, dang. I've played through Bohm's entire career so often on OOTP that I've forgotten he was still a straight rookie.

Red Sox up to 4th in the worst team ERA list after yesterday's 9 ER game effort. Have now given up 11 more in today's game with still 3 more innings to go.
They are definitely gunning for that title! Well done Red Sox.
   20. Walt Davis Posted: August 13, 2020 at 06:52 PM (#5969495)
I'm too lazy to track down the precise numbers but the Cubs' pen started with something like 28 ER in their first 25 innings. They've been much better since then (about 21 IP and 7 ER) and have gotten the ERA down to the mid-6s. The SPs meanwhile are sporting a swank 2.65 ERA and 11-3 record. The pen, for all its atrocious performance, managed not to lose a game. The offense is still ticking along at just over 5 runs a game.
   21. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: August 13, 2020 at 06:53 PM (#5969496)
Last Phillie to get an extra base hit in his first PA — Domonic Brown. I hope that is not a harbinger.
   22. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 13, 2020 at 06:55 PM (#5969497)
oooh, now up to 16 ER so far in this game, still in the 6th. Sox aiming high for that team ERA of over 6.00 this season.
That would be a huge achievement for those battlers from Boston.
Well done boys, well done.
   23. Walt Davis Posted: August 13, 2020 at 07:06 PM (#5969500)
More Cub run-down:

Willson -- back baby
Rizzo -- Rizzo given league BA is in the 230s too
Hoerner -- virtually zero power, virtually zero walks
Javy -- reasonably Javy given league BA is in the 230s
Bryant -- started with a huge slump, getting better, nothing 80 points of BA wouldn't cure
Schwarber -- not picking up where he left off
Happ -- 302/434/581, I'm satisfied
Heyward -- a spell of competent Heyward
Caratini -- fine for a backup C, not for a DH
Bote -- better than any of us had a right to expect
Kipnis -- 364/462/864 in 26 PA
Almora -- still can't hit
Souza -- still can't hit
Phegley -- exists

Hendricks -- Hendricks
Lester -- Making me think I want him back next year (not at his option price); he's in prime junk lefty mode (4.8 K/9)
Darvish -- 8.5/1.1 K/BB
Chatwood -- one monstrous start but 13.8/2.4 K/BB
Mills -- two awesome starts with awful peripherals

Wick & Jeffress have been bullpen saviors, expect radical overusage. Kimbrel is almost completely off the radar now (2.2 horrible IP -- I am never letting Theo sign a non-SP FA ever again).

Position player pitching alert: Boston 2nd baseman Jose Peraza nearly loses a leg, taking a liner off the knee, and is out of the now 17-5 game. Catcher Kevin Plawecki apparently drew the short straw and is now on the mound in the 9th.
   25. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 13, 2020 at 08:13 PM (#5969516)
17 ER. I have done the maths, but this terrific effort may just push them to the top of the worst team ERA standings! Woohoo

Connor Brogdon’s career is not off to the same start as Alec Bohm. He gives up a 3 run HR to Pedro Severino on his first pitch.

I’ll share this here because I think people will get a chuckle. I coach a few youth teams. I was working at a practice with my 8/9 year old team tonight and trying to explain to 8 year old Ben (a righty) that on throws to first base he should have his right foot on the base so he can stretch farther (further?). Ben looked at me and asked “is the right foot longer than the left foot?”

Like that’s a great, genuine question. I just loved that.

Phils bullpen ERA before the game: 9.63

5 runs in 3.1 so far tonight

Jose, that’s hilarious!

The kid is a riot. A few weeks ago he asked if I had a kid on the team. We had the following exchange;

Ben: Do you have a son on this team?

Jose: Nope.

Ben: You don’t even a wife?

Jose: Nope.

Ben, thinks for a minute: That’s OK, neither do I.

He’s a riot.

Position player pitching alert! Neil Walker brought in to curb the Murderers Row from Baltimore.
   32. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: August 13, 2020 at 09:06 PM (#5969534)
7 runs in 3.2 and counting for the Phils bullpen.

Edit: Walker stops the bleeding!
   33. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 13, 2020 at 09:22 PM (#5969537)
Yu Darvish is pitching pretty well tonight, but at 92 pitches through six, the pen will need to play a role.

3 HR night for Mookie Betts, for a record-tying 6th time. I don’t think I will ever understand the refusal of a prosperous MLB team to pay fair market value to retain his services.

Yeah but we get to cheer for payroll flexibility now! Truly, so much more exciting.
