Suzuki starts likely last spring opener with a hit for M’s

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Ichiro Suzuki still felt the nerves of competition at age 45.

Suzuki started what may be his final spring training with a two-run, two-out single in the third inning Friday of the Seattle Mariners’ opening 8-1 win over the Oakland Athletics.

Batting seventh and playing left field, Suzuki fouled out in the second inning against Liam Hendriks and singled in the third off left-hander Ryan Buchter. Suzuki then was replaced by a pinch runner. He did not have any chances in the field.

Ichiro could appear in another twenty or thirty spring trainings- if he wanted to….

Two of the things I love about Ichiro:

1) The uniqueness of his career - who he is, his style of play, his name and personality, the way he hits, the way he played defense...you'd think we've seen it all after 150 years of organized baseball, but then somebody new comes along.

2) He obviously just loves being on a baseball team. He is playing this season after a 2018 where - for the entire year - he reached base a total of 12 time (nine singles and three walks). He doesn't need the money, or the fame, or any specific milestone - he clearly loves being a baseball player. I may be projecting incorrectly, but he strikes me as a joyful athlete, which is fun to watch.
