Team USA baseball defeats Dominican Republic, moves a win away from gold medal game

Team USA defeated the Dominican Republic by a 3-1 score as part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics baseball tournament on Tuesday night. As a result, the Americans will now advance to play South Korea on Thursday with a spot in the gold medal game vs. Japan on the line.

Team USA jumped ahead early, staking out a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run home run by Boston Red Sox first base prospect Triston Casas. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth, when the Americans’ advantage swelled to 3-0 thanks to a solo home run by Tyler Austin. (Austin had also scored as part of Casas’ homer.)

On the pitching side of things, Team USA was paced by veteran southpaw Scott Kazmir. He delivered five shutout innings for the Americans, holding the Dominican Republican to just two hits and a walk. Kazmir struck out five of the 18 batters he faced and threw 80 pitches overall. The Americans then received four shutout innings from a combination of four relievers: Brandon Dickson, Scott McGough, Anthony Gose and David Robertson.

So Team USA got five shutout innings from Kazmir, and four shutout innings from the bullpen... in a 3-1 nine-inning game?

Reading the story, Robertson gave up a HR with two outs in the ninth. So one of the four shutout bullpen innings... not quite a shutout.

That sounds like a writer getting his copy ready and then just as he was set to hit "send" some dude homered and he forgot to update it.

Jose - yeah, sounds right. I nearly did that myself once.

Please note: "repêchage" is a term that should never be applied to a baseball game.

Anyway. USA-KOR 6am EDT Thursday; a win puts them in the gold medal game vs. JPN at 6am EDT Saturday. (A loss and they play DOM for the bronze at 11pm Friday.)

Oh man, I remember when the Mets traded Kazmir to Team USA. Some metropolitan fans self-immolated over that one!

It appears the US is up 4-1 but I can't find it on TV anywhere.

It was on USA in Portland.

I watched a few innings getting ready to leave for the airport.

Which of the Olympic teams has taken baseball the most seriously, in terms of rosters representing their best players? I mean, I know the U.S. has more depth than any country, but the roster has nothing to do with the quality of the depth. Who is the best player on the U.S. team?

How do you want to define "best?" Overall career? Probably Todd Frazier. Performance? Tyler Austin is leading the team in AVG/OBP/SLG. But maybe the guy we look back on as the best is going to be (and this should please you) Triston Casas. Top 50 propsect who has been good at AA and great in the Olympics. He leads the team in HR and RBI and is second in AVG and SLG and third in OBP. If you want to include pitchers you can probably make a case for David Robertson who had a very good MLB career and in both qualifying and the Olympics has done a good job as the closer.

My sense of the overall is that all the nations took it seriously with the professional leagues causing some challenges for adding players.

Not surprisingly, the host team. The Japanese roster has many of NPB's biggest stars, and NPB took a month long break in the middle of the season to allow them to participate.

...and that's how you win a gold medal, folks. Congrats, Japan. (Maybe if baseball returns to the Olympics in LA in '28, the USA will get to use, you know, actual star players...?)
