Team USA Olympic qualifying baseball roster includes Matt Kemp, Todd Frazier, Homer Bailey

Mike Scioscia will manage Team USA, and his coaching staff includes Jerry Weinstein (bench coach), Dave Wallace (pitching coach), Ernie Young (hitting and first base coach), Darren Fenster (third base coach), and Roly de Armas (bullpen coach).

Host team Japan has already qualified for Olympic baseball competition this year, as has Mexico, Israel, and South Korea. The U.S. will be competing with the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Canada, Venezuela, Colombia, and Nicaragua in the qualifying tournament in Florida that begins May 31. The winner of that tournament will claim the fifth spot in the Olympics. The second- and third-place teams from that tournament will then compete with Australia, Taiwan, and the Netherlands for the sixth and final Olympic berth. So in essence, Team USA is one of 11 teams vying for two remaining spots.

Edwin Jackson is somehow only 37 presently.

I wonder what the competitive level of baseball this qualifier tournament represents.

Jackson was not competitive at the MLB level two years ago with the Jays when he last pitched in 2019.

That would've been a decent roster for the 2012 Olympics, but perhaps still with a bronze-medal ceiling.

Does the NHL still give its teams 3 weeks off to play in the Winter Olympics? Shame MLB can't do the same, tho I grasp how fubared the logistics & side-effects would be.

Julio Franco chose to play for the Dominican team instead, I assume?

#4 Nah, he started playing for Atlantis and has chosen to represent them

At this point the NHL and Player's Union can't seem to decide for the long-term. For 2022, they are scheduled for the 3-week break and allowing NHL players, but they didn't in 2018.

I can't imagine any team allowing their pitchers to go even if there was a break.
