Ted Leitner, Larry Lucchino to join Padres Hall of Fame

Together, Ted Leitner and Larry Lucchino will enter the Padres Hall of Fame.

The team announced Friday that Leitner, the longtime radio (and sometimes TV) broadcaster for the Padres from 1980 through 2020, and Lucchino, the club’s president and CEO from 1995 to 2001, will be inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame before the July 7 game against the San Francisco Giants.

The ceremony, fittingly, will be at Petco Park, which likely would not exist without Lucchino, hired by John Moores two years after spearheading efforts to build Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

“We knew right from the outset that this was all about a ballpark play to stabilize the team,” Lucchino said by phone Friday afternoon. “But I had been warned by various people in baseball, including Peter O’Malley, that I should not come west for this experience, because I could not tell from where I was, but the Padres games are just where they should be. They should be on the Dodgers’ station because it was a strong overlap between San Diego and Los Angeles.

“While there was some overlap, I think San Diego has demonstrated to the world that it is a great baseball town.”

Will they also induct a paper bag full of bribe money to city officials into the Padres Hall of Fame? It had more to do with approval of the new park than Larry did.

Leitner was one of the most annoying announcers ever.

Leitner was awful, like, Hawk Harrelson-level awful.

Do the Padres not have any, y'know, actual players to put into their Hall of Fame...?

#4 They have an annual ceremony where they induct Tony Gwynn again.

Everybody is happy.

Man I thought a Kurt Bevacqua reference would get at least a chuckle.

Here he is when he wasn't pissing off Lasorda:

I feel like they don't keep guys around that long to leave a mark with the franchise? Only three Padres have played in 1000+ games - Gwynn, Winfield, and Templeton. Compare that to the Royals who came in the league at the same time and have their own problems retaining players in the free agency era - they have 13 players with 1000 games.

the Mets are seven years older than the Padres and Royals, and they have 10 players with 1000 games

The last Padres MLB player inducted was Ken Caminiti in 2016 (Ted Williams, who played for the PCL Padres and was from San Diego, went in the same year). The only inductees since then were Jack McKeon and Kevin Towers. Only eight Padres MLB players are in the Padres HoF; in addition to Caminiti, they are Nate Colbert, Randy Jones, Dave Winfield, Tony Gwynn, Trevor Hoffman, Benito Santiago, and Garry Templeton.

Phil Nevin, Adrian Gonzalez and maybe Eric Show (only 100-win SDP pitcher) seem to be the only remaining reasonable candidates. (Or maybe a joint induction for "The Andys": Ashby, Benes and Hawkins, who have 199 SDP wins between them?)

Jake Peavy is better than any of them.

I thought this was the only reason anyone remembered Kurt Bevacqua.

That's certainly No. 1, but he did have the decisive hit, a 3-run blast, in the only World Series game the Padres ever won.
