If you're tired of TTO baseball, the Astros might be your ticket. They've struck out the fewest times in the AL. However, they haven't completely turned their backs on TTO though, as they're also 2nd in the league in walks and 4th in homers. Oddly, they enter today 40-19 against teams with winning records with a +122 run diff in those games, but are 13-14 against teams at .500 or below. Team OPS+ is 117. And congrats to Yordan Alvarez, who became a papa and returned from paternity leave to hit a homer his 1st at bat last night.

A nicely AC'd day game in Arlington – I have heard of one guy in the entire Tiger lineup: Nomar Mazara.
   3. JJ1986 Posted: July 07, 2021 at 01:49 PM (#6028073)
Let me guess some random Tigers: Eric Haase. Victor Reyes might be on the team. I think Jeimer Candelario is still there. Zack Short. The had a guy named Castro who played every position.
   4. Astroenteritis Posted: July 07, 2021 at 01:52 PM (#6028075)
Tigers- Akil Baddoo. He looks like a good, young player, at least it seems like he played well against Houston.
   5. BDC Posted: July 07, 2021 at 02:08 PM (#6028080)
OK, I thought they were saying "Erykah Badu."
   6. BDC Posted: July 07, 2021 at 02:09 PM (#6028081)
Short is playing shortstop, that's convenient.

pesky work getting in the way for me, but All-Stars deGrom and Burnes are facing off right now in a makeup game.
1-1 in the second inning....
   8. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 07, 2021 at 02:41 PM (#6028087)
That gives deGrom a 4.50 ERA for July. Small sample size, of course, but something to keep the worry warts occupied.
   9. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 07, 2021 at 04:16 PM (#6028119)
How real is Akil Baddoo? He looked crazy athletic when I saw him during the Angels-Tigers series, but I don't recall seeing him on any prospect lists.
   10. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 07, 2021 at 04:17 PM (#6028121)
David Fletcher's got a 21-game hitting streak going.
   11. Howie Menckel Posted: July 07, 2021 at 04:20 PM (#6028122)
deGrom CG - 7 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 10 K

saw his 83rd and last pitch - a 3-2 count, and a caught-looking on a 100 mph fastball at the letters.

ERA has ballooned over 1.00 thanks to a pair of solo HR

and of course he trails 2-1 in this opener of a twinbill

BUT another clutch HR by Peraza ties it in the 9th - er, 7th
   12. JJ1986 Posted: July 07, 2021 at 04:20 PM (#6028123)
Haha. #### Josh Hader.

yeah, his minor league numbers don't jump out at you, but he's only 22, and of course he didn't play at all last year.

EDiaz - 6.39 ERA in non-SV situations entering the game, bores the fans in the top of the 8th/10th

Ohtani fouls a ball of his knee. Limps around a bit. Two pitches later, homer #32 unties a 2-2 game.

here is a series of ##s I hadn't seen before. Name the player whose HR totals by season goes
5
10
12
2
9
48 *OUTLIER!!*
8
6
   17. Rally Posted: July 07, 2021 at 06:12 PM (#6028162)
The 6 could be more, since that’s the 2021 season. But still quite the outlier.

Walsh goes back to back with Ohtani

#9 and #13 ... have you not kept up with my monthly Baddoo updates?? Here's the one from last weekend:

Akil Baddoo continues to hit. He changes his hitting profile every monthy but they all seem to work:

April: 222/242/571 with 2 BB in 66 PA but 11 of his 14 hits were XBH
May: 256/431/419 with 14 BB in 58 PA ... what is that, Tony Phillips maybe? Who walks Baddoo 25% of the time?
June: 348/434/455 ... now he's Wade Boggs

After 4 HR in his first 25 PA, he has 1 HR in 180 PA but good doubles and lots of walks.

I'm not sure what weird combo of good production he's got ready for July -- maybe he'll start hitting RH.

#16: Got it on my first guess ... the oft-injured (but not this year) Jorge Soler.

Jared Walsh with his 22nd homer. What an absolute find for the Angels.

Doing better than me. I'd have guessed that he's something made by a Japanese car company. A light-sport SUV maybe.

Jared Walsh with his 22nd homer. What an absolute find for the Angels.

He's an ex-pitcher isn't he? I seem to remember hoping that he could be a 2-way player. Although I guess the Angels are doing okay with the other one.
   25. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 07, 2021 at 06:54 PM (#6028176)
Walsh did both in college. Has been primarily a hitter as a professional, though he has had a few appearances in relief in the minors. He did throw 5 innings with the Angels two years ago.

Guys who do both growing up are great athletes. Being able to do both well in college or the minors is, I maintain, the sign of truly superior coordination. That may not translate into actual success, but it's a good foundation.
   26. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 07, 2021 at 07:05 PM (#6028177)
HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY! Walsh with two homers, Ohtani with a homer, Heaney with a rare good start against a genuinely good team.

Re 9: You don't see guys who hit .214 at Ft. Myers on prospect lists. I'm sure the Tigers were thinking, "OK, he's still only 22, give 'im another year in the FSL, maybe move him up to AA Trenton before the year is out." (Then he slashed 325/460/750 in spring training, and...)
   28. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 07, 2021 at 07:13 PM (#6028180)
Everything I know about Baddoo, I got from seeing him tear up Angels pitching and playing an awesome centerfield. However, I'm now subscribed to Walt's newsletter, so I'm all set.
   29. Howie Menckel Posted: July 07, 2021 at 07:14 PM (#6028181)
love it when they sneak in a good line amid the usually drab player updates!

07.07... Cubs placed RHP Jake Arrieta on the 10-day injured list with right hamstring tightness.
Spin: It is unclear when Arrieta may have suffered the injury, but it's likely his hamstring did not want to hang around for the right-hander's next outing and tried to escape. There is no timetable currently known for the veteran's return. Arrieta currently carries a 6.30 ERA and 1.64 WHIP over 74 1/3 innings this season.

Baddoo is a Rule 5 pick so the Tigers had no option to send him to the minors this year, regardless of performance. They could have sent him back to the Twins, of course.
   31. Snowboy Posted: July 07, 2021 at 07:42 PM (#6028184)
Arrieta currently carries a 6.30 ERA and 1.64 WHIP over 74 1/3 innings this season.

Matt Harvey carries a 7.34 ERA over 72.1IP into his start tonight for BAL.

Hey, remember when Harvey pitched for LAA in 2019?
Neither do I.
   32. BDC Posted: July 07, 2021 at 07:51 PM (#6028187)
Baddoo went 2-for-3 today and was then pinch-hit for by the other Tiger I'd heard of, Miguel Cabrera.

The Mets down 3-0, load the bases with nobody out in the 6th inning with three walks, and then fail to score because the meat of their lineup struck out 3 straight times.
   35. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: July 07, 2021 at 09:20 PM (#6028198)
Vlad II has chance to win the triple crown this year. That's cool.

Nogowski, who the Cardinals traded for "cash considerations" has a four hit day in his first appearance for the Pirates.
   37. salvomania Posted: July 07, 2021 at 09:59 PM (#6028203)
Nogowski, who the Cardinals traded for "cash considerations" has a four hit day in his first appearance for the Pirates.

CFB, it was his third game with the Pirates: his first game, on Monday, he had two hits and a walk; his second game, yesterday, he had a hit and a walk; then today he had the four-hit game.
   38. phredbird Posted: July 07, 2021 at 10:19 PM (#6028204)

looking like a regression game for the cards so far tonight, oviedo loads the bases in the bottom of the first with nobody out, then gets two outs on a nasty K and a popup, then ... hits the next batter.

we got out of the inning with just that one run allowed, though, so it could be worse.
   39. phredbird Posted: July 07, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6028206)

carlos martinez on the IL
   40. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 07, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6028207)
Like last night, the Yankees start with 3 runs in the 1st @ Seattle. BB to Judge & Sanchez, Voit 1B, Torres 1B. Nick Nelson filling in for scheduled Yankees starter Domingo German, who underwent an emergency root canal this morning.
   41. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 07, 2021 at 10:41 PM (#6028209)
Juan Soto looks to be heating up a bit, with the latest example a 1st-inning 3-run HR @ San Diego.
   42. cardsfanboy Posted: July 07, 2021 at 10:48 PM (#6028211)

CFB, it was his third game with the Pirates: his first game, on Monday, he had two hits and a walk; his second game, yesterday, he had a hit and a walk; then today he had the four-hit game.

Okay, don't let facts get in the way of a good story. :) Although your facts are even better to the story.
   43. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 07, 2021 at 10:58 PM (#6028212)
Nick Nelson started well, then had some control issues, leaving with 2 outs in the 1st, bases loaded, after giving up a run, but being bailed out by Luis Cessa. Emergency root canal victim Domingo German is now warming up in the bullpen, apparently fortified by the extra hour of recovery time he got by skipping the 1st inning.

EDIT: ALL RISE! Aaron Judge HR (#20) makes it 5-1 Yankees in 2nd.

EDIT II: Cessa still pitching in 2nd. German no longer warming up.
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: July 07, 2021 at 11:28 PM (#6028215)
I guess it was too much to expect this team to actually win 3 games in a row.
   45. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 07, 2021 at 11:45 PM (#6028216)
Down, 3-0, the Padres IBB Juan Soto with runners on 1st & 2nd, 2 outs, in the 2nd inning. Josh Bell & Starlin Castro made them pay with 2-run singles, and the Nationals added 2 more in the 3rd. 9-0.
   46. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 07, 2021 at 11:58 PM (#6028217)
Domingo German now on the mound for the Yankees in the 5th. Strikes out 1st batter, not showing any signs of distress from the root canal, at least yet.

EDIT: Strikes out the 2nd batter, and gets the 3rd to pop out to CF. How long before other pitchers demand the Domingo German surgery?
