Tennessee Volunteers’ dominating regular season earns them No. 1 seed in NCAA baseball tournament

They have been the consensus No. 1 team in the polls all but one week since March 28, and enter regionals having won eight straight and 12 of 13.

“It’s really cool to win the SEC tournament,” Vols slugger Drew Gilbert said, “but we have bigger goals in mind and know we still have a lot of baseball in front of us.”

The 64-team tournament opens Friday in 16 regionals. Winners advance to eight best-of-three super regionals. Winners of those super regionals move on to the College World Series in Omaha.

The top eight national seeds are assured of hosting super regionals if they win their regionals.

The national seeds following Tennessee: Stanford (41-14), Oregon State (44-15), Virginia Tech (41-12), Texas A&M (37-18), Miami (39-18), Oklahoma State (39-20) and East Carolina (42-18).

Unbelievably proud right now. A kid I coached when he was 10 is the #2 starter for Virginia Tech who are the top seed in their bracket. It's incredibly cool to see how far he's come.

Go East Carolina I guess.

It's kinda cute how they keep trying to make the College World Series a thing. "It's just like the Big Dance, only it's a smaller ball and they play outside!"

Yea, its silly they are trying to get people excited about their event.

Anyway, if you have never been to the CWS, I highly recommend it. The TV audience isn't there, but they draw a packed house, and its a party atmosphere.

Of the sporting events I've never been to, it tops my wish list.

The team I root for (Georgia Tech) is the #2 seed in the Vols' regional -- we're in trouble. (And would be regardless - very strong offense, but weak defense and no pitching).
The #1 overall seed "never" wins this thing, but they've been far and away the best club in the nation this year.
I've never been to Omaha but they play the D2 CWS within walking distance of my house (in NC). It is not the same atmosphere! Kind of wild how different D1 is from the rest of college sports.

Tennessee is so amazingly good. They've gone 53-7 and underperformed their pythag, which is 55-5.

i mean, they're incredible. they hit .310/.421/.610 as a team and their opponents hit .194/.260/.314. alternately, they've a team era of 2.35 versus their opponents' 9.05. and a pretty steady defense (you can run on them, though).
you do that by having no holes - the worst era on the team (>7 innings) is 2.69. of their 11 hitters with the most pa, their worst hitter has a .901 ops.
oh yeah, they did this while playing in the sec.

Re: 10

Wow. Are they the best college team of the 21st century? Those stats are ridiculous.

there are far more knowledgeable people out there than me to weigh in but i think so, yes.
you could credibly argue that this is the greatest college team of all time. (now watch them lose in the next round to notre dame...)

And they’ve now been eliminated by Notre Dame.

Welp, that's baseball, Susan.

Seeing on Twitter the Vols - both team and fans - are utter jerks. If so, then, go Irish.
