Gerrit Cole claimed a remarkable Major League record early in Monday’s start against the Rangers at Globe Life Field.
The Yankees’ ace ran his strikeout tally to 61 batters between walks, marking the longest single-season streak since the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893.
Cole equaled, then surpassed a mark of 58 strikeouts between walks that was set last Thursday by the Brewers’ Corbin Burnes. Cole struck out three in the first inning, tying Burnes with a punchout of Nate Lowe and then breaking the record by fanning Joey Gallo to end the frame.

Both of Roger Clemens' 20K games came against the teams that set the AL record for strikeouts in a single season. The Tigers' record setting total in 1996 would have had them 14th out of 15 teams in 2019.
