Milb tv is free this weekend. (I've never tried it.)
Per Matt Gelb of the Athletic:
Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola and Zach Eflin — pitched to a 3.48 ERA in 53 starts. The Phillies went 26-27 in those games. The rest of their starters combined for a 5.65 ERA in 35 games. The Phillies went 18-17 in those.
Phils are 5-1 in in Matt Moore’s starts. His ERA in those starts is 5.92. He’s given up 2 in 2 innings so far today, so I doubt his ERA will drop by the time he finishes up.

Padres with the 24-8 lead. Unfortunately they couldn't plate a run in the 7th and just missed out on the scoring in every inning thing which I believe is rare. Can someone smarter than me look this up and see how often it's been done.
Since 1900, only two teams have managed to score in each of nine innings of a game. On June 1, 1923, the New York Giants did it against the Philadelphia Phillies, winning 22-8. On September 13, 1964, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 15-2 and likewise never gave the opposing pitchers an inning to be proud of.
In that Padres @ Nationals run-fest, the Padres Jake Cronenworth hit for the cycle & Will Myers had 7 RBI, while Juan Soto had 2 HRs, and 4 hits, for the Nationals.

Ooh, it's a full weekend omnichatter so this might not go to waste ...
Braves trade for Stephen Vogt, sending the DBacks a minor-league 1B named Mason Berne.
Now they traded another minor-league 1B the other day to the Cubs for Joc Pederson. And if you thought the Cubs return was light ... Berne is a 25-yo who hasn't yet played above rookie ball and has 5 HR in 250 PA ... as a 1B.
I’m going to my first game at Guaranteed Rate Field tonight. My son in Chicago has adopted them because it’s way cheaper and less frat boyish than Wrigley. He couldn’t care less about baseball but he likes events. He has a weird mix of genes; neither my wife nor I are partial to crowds/events.

The Cubs do have a pretty weak schedule in the 2nd half. One more in Ari then 4 in StL then Ari for 3 in Wrigley. They get series with KC, Mia, 4 with Minn ... 2 series with Rox, Pitt and Cards. Of course it's not clear the Cubs are actually better than any of those teams but it should help keep them around 500 at season's end at least.

tracking a possible unique team accomplishment:
From 1901 thru 2019, only one team had ever lead its league in both scoring runs and preventing runs 3 seasons in a row. They did it four years consecutively; the 1936-39 New York Yankees, probably the greatest dynasty ever.
In 2020, the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a 3-year run of this feat (2018-2020), to become the 2nd team to accomplish this.
In 2021, to date, the Dodgers lead the NL in runs scored per game, and are narrowly off the lead in runs allowed per game also
team G .RA R/G
SFG 90 327 3.63
NYM 88 322 3.66
LAD 92 335 3.67 (4 fewer runs would put them in first)
Possible the health of Mr de Grom will determine if the Dahgers make it four in a row.

Of course 2020 gets a bit of an asterisk. But if they do pull it off this year too, that will be something. It's particularly impressive they lead in scoring given Dodger Stadium is still a bit of a pitcher's park.
Meanwhile, I'm curious what the record is for most RS in 2 games -- the Padres have scored 5 through 3 so far while leaving plenty of runners on.

for those of us who have tried to explain how weird this Yankees roster is, Fox graphic notes that the Yankees are last or second-to-last in all of MLB in:
- runners thrown out on the bases, 35
- runners thrown out at home, 15
- stolen bases, 20
- taking extra base, 33%
- how often do their baserunners score, 27%
the idea that Kluber and Taillon were your No. 2 and 3 SPs always struck me as bizarre, and this is an offense - well, all year it has felt as if GM Cashman was looking to get fired.
not true, duh. but if you had wanted to, this was a great blueprint.

1-1 in the 6th when the Sox leave the field after an angry Yankees "fan" tosses a baseball at (and possiblt hits) LF Verdugo.

Battled for a Rivalry W.
Authorities found two people shot outside the ballpark — a woman who was shot in the back, and a man who was wounded in the leg, officials said. A short while later, two other shooting victims walked into a hospital in Southeast Washington. Police believe they were wounded in the same incident. All of the victims’ wounds were believed to be non-life-threatening.
Saw a report elsewhere that one victim might be a stadium employee. Details still murky, at best.

There's a difference between posting and copy/pasting at least two dozens comments from another site. Posting, as a general rule, actually means writing.
Police said there were three victims: a woman who was found wounded outside the stadium and two others who showed up at a hospital a short time later and were taken into custody. Police believe the incident was gunfire from at least one car toward another; they recovered one of the vehicles believed involved and are seeking another. All of the victims’ wounds were believed to be non-life-threatening, police said.
Police officials initially tweeted that there were four people they thought were wounded in the incident but later updated the number to three. Police were trying to determine what led to the gunfire but noted that they believe it was unrelated to the game.
Looks like some kind of drive-by shooting. During games there are a lot of police around Nationals Park, providing security, directing traffic, and closing some streets to vehicles. The 1st District Police Station is also only a couple of blocks away. Not a great time or place to start shooting if you want to get away with it.

#56:
Starters 4 and 5 and 6 are pretty bad.
The bullpen implodes a couple of times a week. Last night was a prime example: they get 5 shutout innings from Vince Velasquez! As the Sisters of No Mercy would say, “Will wonders never cease?” 3 more no run innings from Neris and Bradley, then Ranger Suarez gives up the tying two runs with the first two batters in the 9th. The game continues today after the deluge in the tenth.
Nola has been inconsistent.

Jays took a DH from Rangers by a combined 15-0. Oof!
Willson Contreras ends the Cubs loss with one of the worst batter-attempts at stealing a strike you're ever gonna see. Soria hangs a breaking ball that Contreras probably would have hit 400 feet if he'd seen it coming but I assume it fooled him. Right down the middle, breaking only as low as mid-thigh. When most battters would be hanging their heads in shame, Willson starts the trot to first. The ump was not persuaded.
Gleyber Torres’ solo HR gives the Yankees the lead. He also homered yesterday, so perhaps he’s getting his act together.

could Greg Luzinski?
Nogowski is listed at 6-foot-nothing, 245 pounds.
he played a handful of games in LF in the minors, but I'd say no.
The Big Nogowski turns 29 in January. I doubt STL is sweating this one.
Yankees beat the Red Sox, 9-1, taking 2 of 3 at home. That’s about the minimum they needed to do to potentially get back in the playoff race, but it’s a start.

Any word on if the Infant flipped off the crowd and started a Yankees suck chant in retaliation?

Not sure what the big deal is. I’d boo *my own* baby if he was wearing a Red Sox jersey.

They shouldn’t boo. With the way things are going for the Yankees, the infant will be starting in RF for them next week.
Meanwhile, I'm curious what the record is for most RS in 2 games -- the Padres have scored 5 through 3 so far while leaving plenty of runners on.
HR also inspired an audible "Let's Go Mets!" chant. those fans do travel, as they say.
Tough times for some key players

Tonight’s game has been called. Obviously. The Nats have confirmed a shooting outside the third base gate. No more baseball tonight, as everyone’s safety takes priority. Hope everyone is ok. We’ll talk to you here from Nats Park tomorrow.

Everything is totally calm within Nationals Park at this point. Fans are being told to leave through them CF and RF gates. Gunshots were heard on the third base side OUTSIDE the ballpark. A scary situation, but fans are filing out calmly.
..............
[hmm, let's just say I would not be in the "first wave" of exiting fans.]
start of game was delayed for an hour because oh, no, it looked like it might rain.
didn't, apparently, so they started at 8 pm for Fox national TV - and a biblical flood ever since.
1-1 in the 6th when the Sox leave the field after an angry Yankees "fan" tosses a baseball at (and possiblt hits) LF Verdugo.
play resumes in the monsoon, and Sanchez launches a titanic shot to RF.
this ball had to be 300 feet, maybe as much as 315 feet, even.
fan - who looks old enough, perhaps, to be 2021 Jeffrey Maier - tries for an encore, but the ball hit him above the wrist so it's a legit Little League HR and Yanks lead, 2-1.
#bandbox
also Phillies blew a 2-0 run lead in the 9th and now THAT game is monsoon-delayed at 2-2
cagey veteran OF Pollock hits his 7th HR of this short-schedule month of July and would be a fine stretch-run bat for anyone if - he wasn't already on the Dodgers

CNN: Four people shot outside of Nationals Park during baseball game Saturday night, according to updated information from DC’s Metropolitan Police Department.
Bad news, we just miss out transfer train, wait for the next one in 12 minutes — which gets canceled. Next one is 20 minutes later. Oh well.

Before the current rain delay, Cole was on the mound to start the 7th inning. He’d been in the dugout for 40 minutes. Wut. #Yankees
the next update on tonight's game is 10 minutes away. it's not even suspended yet
the sideline guy - Rosenthal? - said that in 25 years, it's the worst conditions he's ever seen for a game being played.
me, too
they did reschedule Thursday's makeup game of BOS-NYY til Aug 24, but I think the weather is ok tomorrow so why not play 2?
the Mets played TEN doubleheaders before the All-Star break - the most in MLB to that point since 1978 Blue Jays

Boone apologized to Alex Cora for the fan throwing the ball at Verdugo. Said it was awful, embarrassing and unacceptable. He said he would have pulled his guys too. #Yankees #RedSox
At least we know America is back baby. Covid under control, let the shootings begin!
I'll shut up for good. You now have even "fewer posts here."
Feel free to read and re-read posts like #26 and #44 over and over and over for all the great breaking news they offer and how they contribute to making this site a distinctive, worthwhile community.
Come Off World to Discord where we're discussing the hagfish and "swift escapes, spellbinding clots of slime"!
will not provide any evidence, so as not to anger BBTF's new schoolmarm.
apparently we're going back to "trust, but verify."
Pirates announcer gets two fabulous calls in two days. His Stallings call last night was great and the call on Walkers error today was equally great
I'm not on twitter, so I appreciate someone letting us know what just happened.
To me, it's all welcome, whether it was just learned/observed by Meatwad or Bob Klapisch et al.
Sure, we could go back to the old days, I have a closet full of Sports Illustrated that proves I used to like weekly updates.
But the world's getting quicker as I get older, and I like keeping up.
You don't have to do that. No one is saying that you have to leave.
You're a smart member and contributor to a good community of genuine baseball fans, and you would be missed, Lowry.
The ump was not persuaded.
with PIT, he is 19 for 42 (.452) with 8 RBI as the Buccos' new starting 1B
major sample size issues, but it's amusing if you have no dog in the hunt
Nogowski is listed at 6-foot-nothing, 245 pounds.
he played a handful of games in LF in the minors, but I'd say no.
The Big Nogowski turns 29 in January. I doubt STL is sweating this one.
