The 53-year-old who might pitch forever

Dae-Sung Koo.

The name, particularly if you’re a Mets fan, might be rolling over again and again in your head.

Dae-Sung Koo, that sounds familiar. Dae-Sung Koo ... he pitched, right? Dae-Sung Koo.

Oh yes, of course. Dae-Sung Koo….

But after that 2005 season, his lone in the big leagues, Koo seemingly disappeared from the game. At least in America. After a 3.91 ERA and one wild baserunning ride, the Mets sold his contract back to the KBO. (It didn’t help that his shoulder was injured on that day he slid into home.)

Then, just a few weeks ago—nearly 18 years after that day in 2005—a video from the Australian Baseball League started picking up steam on Twitter. There he was again. Dae-Sung Koo. Pitching a perfect inning. At 53 years old.

That's "Mr. Koo" to you.

Iron Man Joe McGinnity pitched a few years after he died. Just that durable.

Somebody should arrange a charity matchup between Koo and Randy Johnson, except Johnson would knock him down this time.

Get him and and Bill Lee into a game against each other.

I’m a little behind on my Effectively Wild listening (as a result of working mostly from home rather than commuting…small price to pay). So today I heard their delightful interview with 45-year-old Chris Oxspring, who is still also pitching in the ABL, and quite effectively, at least at the time. So I’m thinking that maybe the league isn’t quite ready for prime time.

Ah yes, one of the most memorable ABs and scores of the last quarter-century.

Well, fuck off, you won't be seeing that ever again.

I had high hopes for the ABL. I’ve got a connection to Oz, and winter baseball is baseball but it’s in the winter. But there is very little continuity on the teams year to year so it’s hard to be a fan. Also, the merch sucks.

I'll take the under.

I figured somebody would have linked to John Bois' treatment of Koo by now: LINK

My first thought was "Jamie Moyer?" until I remembered he was like 57 when he retired.
