The A’s Pitching Staff Has Had a Terrible Start to the Season

With 125 runs surrendered in 16 games, Oakland has pitched far worse than any other team in the league. The 29th-place White Sox are closer in runs allowed to the 12th-place Astros than they are to the last place A’s. The A’s 188 ERA- and 156 FIP- paint a similar picture. In fact, with a 7.60 ERA thus far, this Oakland squad has the third-worst staff ERA through 16 games of any team in the integration era, only outdone by the 1951 St. Louis Browns and the 1955 Kansas City A’s; those teams each went on to allow at least 5.7 runs per game across the entire season. A simple glance at each team’s 2023 strikeout and walk rates shows a clear gulf between Oakland and the field:

Many of these struggles have occurred in a handful of huge blowups, as the A’s have surrendered double digit runs in six games. On the second day of the season, fans excitedly watched the major league debut of Shintaro Fujinami, who showed flashes of both elite stuff and extreme wildness in NPB. After sitting down his first six batters and notching four strikeouts, Fujinami allowed eight baserunners, three via walk, while recording just one out before being lifted from the game. His second start also featured a blowup inning after cruising the first time through the order; he exited after 4.1 innings, with four walks and a hit batsman. On Saturday, in the A’s 15th game of the season, Fujinami recorded the team’s first quality start with six innings of one-run ball, but he still took the loss after coming out for a seventh inning and adding two more runs to his line.

They are now at 7.94 RA/G and 7.74 ERA, 57 ERA+ The next closest is Detroit at 6.21 and 5.87.

Their defense isn't bad, at least. Maybe if they just decide to pitch to contact, they might have better results. They have the highest BBB/9 and the lowest SO/9 in the majors.

It's going to be an interesting season.

This was written before their 10-1 loss yesterday. Oakland starters are 0-9 with a 9.39 ERA now, allowing a .975 OPS, which would put their opponents one point behind Stan Musial and one point ahead of Frank Thomas on the career OPS list.

what's their FIP? i am always curious how these peripheral stats work in extreme situations.

It's not broken out by starters/relievers (easily) on Baseball Reference.

The staff ERA is 7.74, the RA/G is 7.94, the FIP is 6.65, and the WHIP is 1.720

2023 MLB offense: 4.66 R/G
- A's pitching: 4.54 R/G
2022 MLB offense: 4.28 R/G

So the A's are responsible for about 1/3 of the increase in offense. Or, another way, the A's have given up 5.9% of all the runs in MLB.

They've given up 135 runs on just 170 hits. The Cards have given up 161 hits but just 80 runs ... only some of that is the 88 vs 62 difference in walks. (A fair chunk is 33 vs 19 HRA.) They've given up 38 more runs than the White Sox on 19 more hits, 11 of them HRs, and 7 more BBs.

--- 871 OPS
1-- 813 OPS
RISP 972 OPS (315/438/533 with 1 BB per 5.5 PA)

4 HR, 6 BB and 2 HBP (and just 3 K) in 34 PA with the bases loaded. How is that even possible?

Anybody know what the team record for most grand slams allowed is?

"The record for most grand slams allowed is 14, set by the Tigers in 1996."

After a couple of reasonably well-pitched games (both ending in losses), the A's are now down 12-2 in the ninth to the Cubs. The game started out ok but the pitching collapsed in the 5th, and Adam Oller, just recalled from the minors, added fuel to the fire later in the game.

In the sweep by the Cubs (in Oakland), the A's were outscored 26-3, giving up 39 hits and 14 walks. Needless to say, you can't have a WHIP near 2 and win. Even in the 4-0 game, the Cubs had 15 baserunners (8 H, 5 BB, 1 HBP, 1 ROE). Their run differential is -86 after 19 games. Last years A's had a -202 run differential -- this year they're about 44% of the way there in less than a month. Obviously that won't continue but ... my god.

The Rays meanwhile cruised 8-0 over the Reds, pushing them to +58.

They're not getting better. 18 runs allowed versus the Rangers today.

The A’s are dominating the Earned Runs category, holding 4 of the worst 5 slots in the American League (including ties):
Earned Runs
1. Fujinami • OAK 24
2. Kaprielian • OAK 21
3. Singer • KCR 19
4. Lynn • CHW 18
5. Kluber • BOS 17
Oller • OAK 17
Waldichuk • OAK 17
Guess they can’t blame the defense.

As of this morning, the A's team ERA of OVER EIGHT was an astounding 3.62 std devs worse than the MLB average.

One team is 3400 should be that extreme, if this were a normal distribution; which I know, it likely isn't, but still....
