The Athletic: How baseball’s unwritten rules helped awaken a Mets-Phillies rivalry

It started in the grayest of areas, a debate Tuesday about which team has the permission to concede first in a blowout, and it escalated Wednesday with a 34-second home run trot that sent the clearest of messages.

This dormant rivalry was invigorated by — of all things — baseball’s unwritten rules. A decade has passed since both the Phillies and Mets held conceivable postseason hopes at the same time. Hate slumbers when the games are irrelevant.

“I think that’s what rivalry is,” Rhys Hoskins said after a 6-0 win. “I think there’s always going to be a little bit of bad blood in a rivalry.”

Jake Arrieta, from across the Phillies clubhouse, heard those words. “He said it!” Arrieta yelled.

Down the corridor at Citi Field, while the Mets said the right things publicly, one privately stated the subtext. “It’s definitely not going to be forgotten.”

Look, throwing at players is really goddamned stupid and I’m with Syzmborski in saying that there should be long suspensions for it.  But I’m also pretty psyched to get back to really hating the Phillies for the first time in a decade.

FALSE! My visceral hatred of the Yankees never takes a game off. I've been known to curse and flip off the TV when they win split-squad spring training games. I wish both sides could lose the Old Timers Game.

I loved the endless home run trot. The only thing that would have made it better would have been the third base coach using that time to go over to the stands and get Hoskins a dog and a beer to hand him for sustenance for the long journey.

Hitting one out is a much better response to a couple up and in than charging the mound is.

I'm still pleased with myself for that tag.

I agree with Scott. I'm not so good at getting into rivalries, but Hoskins did a nice job making me hate him last night. Add Harper and Arrieta to it, and this should be a fun team to root against.

Good for Rhame for responding like an adult. I thought for sure he'd plunk the next guy. It wasn't just the glacial trot, but also an over-the-top celebration at the dugout. There aren't that many adults in this game though, so I don't think I'd bet against a brawl occurring sometime later this year.

Rhame gets a 2-game suspension for headhunting. Looks like he got a pass on precipitating a pace-of-play crisis.

Yeah, that was very '07 Marlins-like.
