If it's a company asset then what he did was stupid in two ways: using it for company biz and then deleting stuff
It sounds like it was a personal phone in some ways (texts and emails were on company's servers ) and a personal phone in other ways (not backed up by company).
I'm guessing it was a personal phone in which case he has every right to "clean" it before letting a bunch of busy bodies look at his intimate details.
Btw if you are in version 2, it's basically a company phone and you should treat it as such. That's the world I lived in and I got a second phone which i used privately and for any company business I wanted to keep away from my security overlords
