Starting pitchers for tonight's #CPBL games.

Uni-Lions vs CTBC Brothers
- Ryan Feierabend (Uni-Lions)
- Ariel Miranda (Brothers)

Fubon Guardians vs Rakuten Monkeys
- 江國豪 (Chiang Kuo-Hao) (Guardians)
- Lisalverto Bonilla (Monkeys)
   4. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 17, 2020 at 07:38 PM (#5941295)
On Sept 7 2008, Ryan Feierabend hurled 7 strong innings for the Mariners en route to a win over the Yankees. He gave up a homer to Jeter in the first then settled down.
   5. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 17, 2020 at 07:38 PM (#5941296)
Ariel Miranda threw 160 innings for the Mariners as recently as 2017.
   6. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 17, 2020 at 07:40 PM (#5941298)
Lisalverto Bonilla pitched well in a brief stint with the Rangers in 2014
   7. vortex of dissipation Posted: April 17, 2020 at 11:57 PM (#5941380)
These games have been entertaining as heck, so far. It's so nice just to be able to sit down and watch an actual baseball game.
   8. PreservedFish Posted: April 18, 2020 at 12:05 AM (#5941382)
I just finished John McPhee's Annals of the Former World, an omnibus with most of his writing on geology. One of the things I learned is that Taiwan is on a tectonic collision course with China. I suppose it will take millions of years to reunite with its lost motherland, but I found it interesting nonetheless.
   9. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 18, 2020 at 02:40 AM (#5941423)
I'm gonna wear my Brothers jersey while I watch these games. My favorite player is... that... guy... right there...

I do have a Brothers jersey, though. It's not bad at all.
   10. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 02:53 AM (#5941424)
This is wonderful.
   11. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 04:20 AM (#5941425)
I might also have fixed my twitter issues. It seems like Safari really doesn’t like that site. Firefox works fine. Now the only mystery that remains is, if I at some point drunkenly deleted my account, or if they did that for me, because I never used it. Either way, I’m ready for today’s games. I also just learned that the Brothers’ cheerleaders are called Sisters. You can follow their warmup routines on twitch.
   12. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 05:56 AM (#5941426)
Ah. Weekend start times! I missed the Guardians’ first run, but now everything is working. So let’s see and – more importantly – understand. I am now on the English commentary train.
   13. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:15 AM (#5941427)
The power show continues. Guardians’ #93 crushed that one. 2-0 Guardians in the 4th.
   14. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:22 AM (#5941428)
I don't think 2 runs will cut it against the monkeys
   15. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:26 AM (#5941429)
You’re probably right about that. 2-1
   16. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:26 AM (#5941430)
Apparently Ariel Miranda is the highest paid player in Taiwan
   17. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:27 AM (#5941431)
I'm not quite streaming yet. still abed
   18. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:35 AM (#5941432)
That’s understandable. The time difference works out much better for me. Especially since I’m on reduced hours at work and usually done for the day at noon, when the games start. Monkeys tied it up.
   19. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:39 AM (#5941433)
#60 with the warning track power.
   20. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:39 AM (#5941434)
Short lived lead.

The play by play guy has a strange accent,.you might have noticed. Can anyone place it?
   21. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:41 AM (#5941435)
Over on Twitch, the Brothers are hammering Ryan Feireband who apparently sucks on any continent.
   22. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:45 AM (#5941436)
woaaaaah....awesome grab!!
   23. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:46 AM (#5941437)
Nice catch by the centerfielder. Bonilla is not exactly cruising, but the Mokeys’ defense is wide awake.
   24. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:46 AM (#5941438)
That was Cheng Chin flashing the leather.
   25. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:49 AM (#5941439)
No idea about the accent. I’m just impressed at how excellent their English is. Granted, it’s a small sample size, but the only Taiwanese person I had spoken to until now, was not nearly as fluent.
   26. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:51 AM (#5941440)
He's apparently from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

Bunting is always high comedy in the cpbl.
   27. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:51 AM (#5941441)
How did a bunt like that turn out so well? Brothers’ 1B has a very bad day on defense.
   28. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:51 AM (#5941442)
Jesus, Guardians absolutely imploding.

   29. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:51 AM (#5941443)
The nightmare continues. 2-3
   30. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 06:53 AM (#5941444)
Granted, the throw to first wasn’t great, but the 1B really should have caught that.
   31. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:00 AM (#5941445)
That could have been worse than just the two runs in this inning.
   32. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:01 AM (#5941446)
Anyone notice the cardboard cutout pervs who have cameras pointed right at the Monkey Girls' behinds?
   33. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:02 AM (#5941447)
Yeah agree....4-2 is a best case scenario just about.

   34. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:04 AM (#5941448)
No, all my attention was on the robot drummers.
   35. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:04 AM (#5941449)
I love the Brothers announcer guy who never bothers to comb his hair. Or is that some kind of K-pop style?

The Monkeys/Brothers games next week will be must see tv!
   36. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:05 AM (#5941450)
Maybe they’re also self-styling in these trying times.
   37. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:05 AM (#5941451)
As far as I'm concerned these English announcers are Pandemic heroes.
   38. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:10 AM (#5941452)
Pace of play definitely better today.
   39. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:18 AM (#5941453)
Over on Switch, the Uni-Lions get one back. It's also 4-2 in the sixth.
   40. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:19 AM (#5941454)
Seems like the right call. The pitcher wasn’t missing any bats
   41. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:24 AM (#5941456)
You can see why these Taiwanese teams lean heavily on foreign pitchers. Their position players are solid. Their pitchers not so much.
   42. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:25 AM (#5941457)
Are you in the UK, Sebastian?
   43. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:27 AM (#5941458)
Hindsight, eh? Nothing like going to the bullpen to pour gasoline onto the fire.
   44. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:28 AM (#5941459)
Austria.
   45. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:28 AM (#5941460)
Tough break....from a grand slam to a strikeout
   46. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:31 AM (#5941461)
Nice. I visited your fine country once. Drove from Munich to Vienna. People drive uh... fast on those highways.

Lin Li is a FORCE
   47. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:32 AM (#5941462)
Not that much better. I admire getting tootblan’d here. Might as well try for three after clearing the bases.
   48. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:33 AM (#5941463)
Uh is communal hot pot safe these days??

I bet Taiwan has awesome ballpark food in normal times.
   49. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:35 AM (#5941464)
Up until the border you’re mostly even allowed to drive fast. We do have speed limits on our Autobahn. Not that people don’t speed regardless, but they’re very much not supposed to.

Also that looked like a nice spread up there in the stands. And it’s especially funny after SNL just uploaded all of the Kenan as David Ortiz on weekend update skits.
   50. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:36 AM (#5941465)
After my trip was over I received in the mail a notice from the Osterreich Polizie that I got a speeding tickets which my rental company charged to my credit card. I didn't understand this as people were blowing by me the entire drive. Oh well. ai put it in the scrap book next to my parking ticket from Sciacca, Sicily.
   51. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:37 AM (#5941467)
The locals usually know where the speed cameras are. And they get a lot of tickets anyway. And the speed limit can change depending on the air quality and general conditions.
   52. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:38 AM (#5941468)
this is a blowout.... tempted to switch to
over to the Bros.
   53. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:41 AM (#5941469)
Wow. That did not look like a homerun off the bat.
   54. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:41 AM (#5941470)
I'm no expert but I'm liking the Monks to win it all this year.
   55. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:45 AM (#5941471)
There’s a 25% chance that you’re right. Those are pretty good odds. But based on what I’m seeing today, it’s hard to say if Monkeys are hitting that well, or if Guardians just don’t know how to pitch or defend.
   56. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:45 AM (#5941472)
I've switched over to see if the Lions can rally in the 9th.
   57. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:47 AM (#5941473)
Okay, this is weird. I’m happy that they seem to enjoy their dinner, but this is still weird.
   58. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:48 AM (#5941474)
nevermind, the Brothers just iced it with a two run home with two outs in the 8th.
   59. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:48 AM (#5941475)
haha, what now? I'm over on Twitch.
   60. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:50 AM (#5941476)
Some of the cheerleaders were sitting around the hot pot and eating. And that is what they filmed during the break. Cheerleaders eating.
   61. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:52 AM (#5941477)
Why not be decadent, too. I’ve started up even more devices and even more streams and now I can switch between the two games on the TV.
   62. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:55 AM (#5941478)
that's a wrap from...uh the other stadium... Brothers win their second straight 6-2
   63. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:55 AM (#5941479)
Brothers win back to back games. Good for them.
   64. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:57 AM (#5941480)
Most amazingly, unless my math is off, the game was played in UNDER 3 hours.
   65. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:57 AM (#5941481)
I’m not entirely sure what is going on with the replay right now. I think Monkeys were appealing a strikeout maybe because they thought it was a foul ball. But that call was upheld and now the umpire is back on the phone and I don’t know why.
   66. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:58 AM (#5941482)
Replay review... annoyingly sucks ass on any continent.
   67. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 07:58 AM (#5941483)
Yeah, that should check out. The games started at 5:05, if I remember correctly.
   68. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:06 AM (#5941484)
That’d take a comeback of epic proportions. Especially since Guardians are a good bet to give up even more runs this inning. They really need a double play there.
   69. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:06 AM (#5941485)
well not the most entertaining affairs today but hey it's baseball
   70. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:12 AM (#5941488)
We may get to find out if the mercy rule exists in Taiwan.
   71. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:14 AM (#5941489)
That swing to end the inning was an act of mercy. The other game was still going when that half of the 7th started.
   72. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:23 AM (#5941490)
Given that they have absolutely no content right now, I wonder if US Networks are taking a look at Taiwan as well as Korea.
   73. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:34 AM (#5941491)
Those are some looooong foul balls down the lines. Come on, hit the next one fair.
   74. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:38 AM (#5941492)
And after that epic battle we get a single that doesn’t even score a run.
   75. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:43 AM (#5941493)
how was that not strike three
   76. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:48 AM (#5941494)
Guardians with the tiniest glimmer of hope?
   77. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 08:49 AM (#5941495)
They still have four outs to play with and only need to score 8 runs. Piece of cake.
   78. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 09:19 AM (#5941498)
It’s still the longest of long shots, but Guardians have cut their deficit to three. They’re down to their final out, though.
   79. Sebastian Posted: April 18, 2020 at 09:28 AM (#5941499)
Okay, these games seem to run pretty long, but they make up for it with a lot of runs.
   80. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: April 18, 2020 at 01:05 PM (#5941533)
Yasiel Puig should get a job in the CPBL since there's no MLB contract holding him back. He might be able to win an MVP award over there.
   81. Sebastian Posted: April 19, 2020 at 05:12 AM (#5941771)
Uh oh.
As currently scheduled, however, the English broadcasts may not extend beyond Sunday. Because of the costs involved in producing the broadcasts, the network has only guaranteed commentary for five Rakuten Monkeys home games between April 15-19.

Link

It’s not a complete catastrophe. I watched Brothers games last week and that was perfectly fine. But, as I found out yesterday, the English langue commentators are great.
   82. Sebastian Posted: April 19, 2020 at 05:15 AM (#5941772)
And it took two batters until a Guardians infielder committed an error.
   83. Sebastian Posted: April 19, 2020 at 06:10 AM (#5941776)
More delightful weirdness. The umpire is holding the bat of the Guardians CF and then handed it off to maybe get it examined. The commentators don’t know what that’s about, either. But they brought up George Brett immediately.
   84. Sebastian Posted: April 19, 2020 at 06:20 AM (#5941777)
Benches clearing brawl! After Sosa hit the player who apparently had complained about Lin’s bat in the top of the inning.
   85. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:04 AM (#5941778)
Good morning. Two tight affairs underway!
   86. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:05 AM (#5941779)
Aw man I missed a brawl??
   87. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:06 AM (#5941780)
more hotpot!
   88. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:07 AM (#5941781)

Wait that's like barbecue. That Monkey suit could go up in flames!!!
   89. Sebastian Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:08 AM (#5941782)
At least you get to witness the utter cruelty that is having the Monkeys mascots stand around yet another scrumptious spread. Also, I missed that before: why do they have one mascot that looks like it’s out of a video game and another one that looks like a kid’s cartoon?
   90. Sebastian Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:08 AM (#5941783)
I still don’t know what the precise issue with the bat was, btw.
   91. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:10 AM (#5941784)
And they are still bad at bunting in Taiwan.
   92. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:11 AM (#5941785)
Oh wait he swung at that. Nevermind
   93. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:16 AM (#5941786)
Over on Twitch, the Lions have a shot to get off the schneid against the Brothers.
   94. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:17 AM (#5941787)
Yeah the two different monkeys are funny. One looks more like a gorilla. The cute one looks like the one from Zelda.
   95. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:23 AM (#5941788)
Sosa might be finished. Right at 100 pitches and getting hit hard
   96. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:27 AM (#5941789)
he looked safe.... anyhow nice play to end the inning.
   97. Sebastian Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:29 AM (#5941790)
Still, seven innings, three runs. That’s not a bad start based on what I have seen from the league, so far.
   98. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:34 AM (#5941791)
My fan philosophy when watching cpbl is almost always to root for the team that's currently losing. so Go Guardians!
   99. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:36 AM (#5941792)
Yeah definitely solid. But the CPBL folks on Twitter were speaking of him with reverence and awe.

Sosa, btw, started 10 mostly unmemorable games for the Astros in 2011.
   100. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: April 19, 2020 at 07:40 AM (#5941795)
