Dick Wang talking about ordering susage sandwich at Fenway Park but not knowing enough English to get the peppers and onions was a great story.

I love that these are half baseball games, half food travelogues. I want me some Taiwanese bbq at Yankee Stadium.
   303. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 02, 2020 at 07:08 AM (#5946858)
Howie should stay in bed and not jinx it by turning the game on.
   304. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 02, 2020 at 07:15 AM (#5946860)
There's that man again...Chu Yu-Hsien! Bomb!
   305. Howie Menckel Posted: May 02, 2020 at 10:10 AM (#5946874)
got few hints here but it appears I won

so far I am up $1.73 overall on my Monkeys wagers
   306. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 02, 2020 at 10:37 AM (#5946877)
Dick Wang
Seriously?
   307. Spahn Insane Posted: May 02, 2020 at 11:52 AM (#5946884)
Seriously?

Ordering a sausage, no less.
   308. Spahn Insane Posted: May 02, 2020 at 11:55 AM (#5946885)
Though "Dick Wang, sausage aficionado" still doesn't measure up (heh) to Dick Hyman, pianist.
   309. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 02, 2020 at 12:00 PM (#5946886)
Or this guy.
   310. Howie Menckel Posted: May 02, 2020 at 08:43 PM (#5946987)
ok, Monkeys it is here again tomorrow, at -109 (so not quite even money. bet $300 to win $576 - or much smaller fractions of those totals. I doubt you can bet more than $100 at the most).
   311. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 03, 2020 at 06:32 AM (#5947039)
Chu Yu-Hsien is Howie's best friend right now. Tenth home run on the year!!!
   312. Howie Menckel Posted: May 03, 2020 at 06:36 AM (#5947040)
decided to watch a little bit before I go back to bed.

I guess they start the games early on Sundays?

I did catch that HR, though!

the pitcher victimized by the tater was former Yankees great Jose de Paula, who finished his career in pinstripes with a 2.70 ERA (in one MLB game in 2015).
   313. Howie Menckel Posted: May 03, 2020 at 07:13 AM (#5947041)
and now Monkeys up 8-3 after 5 innings and I may call it a day - even though relievers in this league seem to be horrendous. as usual, I need my Monkeys to win by 2 runs or more on @ElevenSportsTW

Yu-Hsien's 10 HR have come in only 13 games.
   314. Howie Menckel Posted: May 03, 2020 at 11:25 AM (#5947078)
9-3 final, Monkeys win - nice!

:)

standings update:

Monkeys 11-3
Lions 7-9
Brothers 6-9
Guardians 6-9

(yes, it's a 4-team league)
   315. Howie Menckel Posted: May 04, 2020 at 09:37 AM (#5947290)
tomorrow is more Taiwan baseball AND Korean baseball, I believe
   316. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 04, 2020 at 10:17 AM (#5947296)
Yup! Big, exciting day in pro baseball tomorrow. KBO opening day AND CPBL will have its first games WITH ACTUAL FANS! (albeit limited to 250)
   317. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 04, 2020 at 10:32 AM (#5947307)
HERE'S SOME GOOD NEWS!

#KBO has just announced #ESPN will be televising 1 KBO game per day, starting with Opening Day action between Samsung Lions and NC Dinos. Details to follow."

(yes, it's a 4-team league)

Despite watching for over a week, I just figured this out yesterday. They play until October. I'm usually a big fan of large sample sizes but, um, isn't that kind of a lot for a four team league?
   319. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 04, 2020 at 04:33 PM (#5947551)
It's a 120-game schedule, with two 60-game halves. There's a gap in the middle of that schedule, something like two or three weeks, in July, because Taiwan is a sauna in the summer. (Source: was born there.)

Also, teams generally only play four or five times a week, instead of six or seven like they do here. No games on Mondays.
   320. bunyon Posted: May 04, 2020 at 04:56 PM (#5947567)
Ah ha!

Hadn't seen the gap. And, yeah, I thought later the reduction in games per week would really add up over that time.

Thanks.
   321. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 05, 2020 at 07:41 AM (#5947743)
Today is the first day of the Brothers own Twitter broadcast. Their announcers are excellent.
   322. bunyon Posted: May 05, 2020 at 07:55 AM (#5947747)
Is there a reason I'm not seeing any games on Twitter?
   323. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 05, 2020 at 08:09 AM (#5947752)
https://mobile.twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1YpKkQNqXPrJj

the Brothers have started their own steam.
   324. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 05, 2020 at 08:11 AM (#5947753)
Mitch Lively one of the American pitchers for the Brothers is doing color. Really enjoyable to listen to him talk about livinf in Taiwan. I want to check out a night market!!
   325. bunyon Posted: May 05, 2020 at 08:12 AM (#5947756)
Thanks. But none of the other twitter streams I've been following have games. And I thought there were games scheduled but maybe I read the schedule wrong.

Anyway, all is well now. Thanks again.
   326. bunyon Posted: May 05, 2020 at 08:17 AM (#5947757)
324: Yeah, his color on Taiwan itself is great.

I will say, watching this league has increased my desire to go to Taiwan. I don't know when/if it'll happen, but they've done a good job selling the island.
   327. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 05, 2020 at 08:35 AM (#5947769)
I was just telling my son the same thing. Taiwan is definitely on my list now.
   328. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 05, 2020 at 08:44 AM (#5947775)
Mitch with the point that defense and pitching is the thing that keeps CPBL behind a league like the KBO. Definitely noticable.
   329. bunyon Posted: May 05, 2020 at 08:50 AM (#5947785)
Agreed. But if the pitching is bad, it makes the hitting less impressive.

The defense is really subpar, which seems strange to me. You'd think that would be the easiest to pull even. We certainly act that way in the States. Or I do, anyway. I basically assume any team could, at any time, put an above average defender (Wait, my math may be wrong there) at every position. But they don't because you also need bats. The CPBL seems the reverse.
   330. Howie Menckel Posted: May 05, 2020 at 05:50 PM (#5948116)
looks like my Monkeys got another day off today. or maybe it rained. does it rain there?
   331. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 06, 2020 at 06:32 AM (#5948263)
1000 fans per game starting Friday! Should make the viewing experience that much better. Take that Korea!
   332. bunyon Posted: May 06, 2020 at 07:47 AM (#5948266)
No Guardoans broadcast?

I’m Looking forward to seeing fans.
   333. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 06, 2020 at 08:03 AM (#5948270)
OK...I really want to stay loyal to CPBL, but sh** like this will push me to Korea. The game is 90 minutes old and it's bottom.lf the third inning! pace of play!!

Bunyon, only one game today. Friday is the big day for fans coming back!
   334. Howie Menckel Posted: May 06, 2020 at 09:50 AM (#5948288)
would this thread have quadruple the amount of clicks if it was called "Taiwan baseball" instead?

maybe. I mean, this is the name of the league. but Taiwan likely is more appealing than China for a 'drive-by' BBTFer.
   335. bunyon Posted: May 06, 2020 at 10:34 AM (#5948302)
Regardless of whether MLB comes back, I'm watching the CPBL playoffs in October.
   336. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 06, 2020 at 10:56 AM (#5948311)

Touch my Monkeys. Touch them!
   337. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 07, 2020 at 06:48 AM (#5948587)
AHHHHHRGHHH! Eleven Sports TW has decided to put the games behind a pay service. No more free Rakuten Monkeys home games. I hope to god Fubon Guardians and CTBC Brothers will still be doing their own free home game broadcasts. What a bunch of idiots.
   338. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 07, 2020 at 06:49 AM (#5948588)
Whatever, I'll just watch KBO where the pitchers actually have rhythm and the games take < 3 hours.
   339. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 07, 2020 at 10:16 AM (#5948611)
My God. The @FubonGuardians might have the worst bullpen I've ever seen in professional baseball at any level. This went from a close exciting game to a laugher in the blink of an eye. #cpbl #taiwan

AHHHHHRGHHH! Eleven Sports TW has decided to put the games behind a pay service.
If one were to have a VPN subscription and use a Canadian IP address, one could bypass the paywall.

I'm watching the game "from Toronto" this morning.
   341. bunyon Posted: May 07, 2020 at 10:23 AM (#5948613)
The Guardians just posted this: https://twitter.com/FubonGuardians/status/1258401424360136705

I think the Monkeys hot start has gone to their heads.
   342. bunyon Posted: May 08, 2020 at 07:40 AM (#5948809)
Cool to see fans. Wayne and Richard are pretty starstruck after their interview with the Minister of Health.
   343. bunyon Posted: May 08, 2020 at 07:46 AM (#5948810)
Also, knuckleball alert on the Guardians game.
   344. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 08, 2020 at 08:34 AM (#5948818)
It's not a big crowd, BUT HEARING FANS CHEER when the Guardians rallied just now to come from behind and take the lead on two straight booming RBI doubles was just so so sweet. Welcome back, baseball fans!
   345. Howie Menckel Posted: May 08, 2020 at 08:58 AM (#5948822)
I have the Lions to win outright.

:(
   346. bunyon Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:30 AM (#5948830)
It's a ball game.
   347. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:35 AM (#5948833)
oop, I had switched to Monkeys/Brothers. Better turn back.
   348. bunyon Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:41 AM (#5948834)
Neither team benefiting from their bullpens.
   349. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:43 AM (#5948835)
GRAND SLAM ices the game for the Brothers! (I think?). The Crowd is going bananas
   350. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:49 AM (#5948838)
good games tonight for the reopenings!
   351. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:51 AM (#5948839)
More exciting than anything Korea has given us yet, anyway.
   352. bunyon Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:54 AM (#5948840)
349: I read that as "ties the game" and have been trying to figure out what I'm missing.

Need more coffee.
   353. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:55 AM (#5948841)
Well, never count those monkeys out. Leadoff homer in the 9th and now the lead is 4.
   354. bunyon Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:57 AM (#5948843)
Not iced, I think
   355. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 08, 2020 at 09:58 AM (#5948844)
Then a walk, and a badly misplayed fly ball becomes a triple, and the lead is 3 with a runner on third and still nobody out.

The monkeys are going to win this, aren't they?
   356. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 08, 2020 at 10:00 AM (#5948845)
You can't let these hardy fans go hone disappointed, Brothers!
   357. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 08, 2020 at 10:09 AM (#5948847)
Big win for Brothers moneyline betters
   358. Howie Menckel Posted: May 08, 2020 at 02:25 PM (#5948921)
wow, I see that the Lions rallied from 7-2 to within 7-6 - but lost - after I kicked off a 4-hour nap. so woulda won with the 1.5-run bet. sigh.
   359. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 08, 2020 at 02:42 PM (#5948926)
. . . after I kicked off a 4-hour nap.
Feeling better? Might be worth a test.
   360. Howie Menckel Posted: May 08, 2020 at 03:47 PM (#5948948)
feel great now
   361. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 09, 2020 at 07:02 AM (#5949021)
The announcing on KBO is so embarrassing. ESPN should be ashamed.
   362. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 12, 2020 at 07:47 AM (#5949655)
I've got the Korean game on this morning instead of the CPBL, and once again I'm amazed that ESPN thinks we want to be tormented by endless blathering by talking heads rather than watching the game. I'd take Wayne and Richard over Karl Ravech and Eddie Perez any day. Still, no denying it's a crisper brand of baseball.
   363. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 12, 2020 at 08:15 AM (#5949657)
Monkeys vs Lions is probably the least appealing matchup in CPBL....total mismatch.
   364. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 12, 2020 at 09:15 AM (#5949668)
Two run homer in the bottom of the ninth ties it for the NC Dinos, and then the walkoff dinger wins it in the tenth....A breakout thriller for the KBO on ESPN, and if they keep putting on games like that my loyalty to Taiwan might waver.
   365. Jefferson Manship (Dan Lee) Posted: May 12, 2020 at 10:22 AM (#5949691)
I like the CPBL and I'm happy it's available to me. But these 4+ hour games featuring dual bullpen implosions are the. worst.

I do enjoy watching Huang Tzu-Peng (Rakuten's submariner) pitch though.
   366. Jefferson Manship (Dan Lee) Posted: May 12, 2020 at 10:45 AM (#5949700)
17-10 now. This feels like Arena Football in a new form.
   367. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 12, 2020 at 10:52 AM (#5949703)
I agree. The relief pitching in the league is just brutal and the pace of play can be glacial.
   368. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 12, 2020 at 11:00 AM (#5949705)
Like I'm glad the Lions made a game of it late, but by then I was already tuned out and moving on with my day.
   369. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 12, 2020 at 03:00 PM (#5949792)

I tried to watch a KBO game the other night, and it was two solid innings of Sciambi and Mendoza interviewing someone British baseball fan, not once mentioning the goings-on in the actual game. Just baffling. I had to turn it off when I couldn’t stand any more.
   370. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 13, 2020 at 08:14 AM (#5949971)
KBO game is a waste today....luckily two good contests underway in Taiwan. If you can believe it the Lions are riding a grand slam to a 5-1 lead over Rakuten. Can they hold it?
   371. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 13, 2020 at 09:37 AM (#5949985)
Can't overstate how much crowd noise adds to the experience of watching sports. Listen to the roar for this Lion's grand slam!
https://mobile.twitter.com/conn_stapleton/status/1260563734742872065
   372. bunyon Posted: May 13, 2020 at 09:38 AM (#5949986)
KBO has the drawback that it's on in the middle of the night for me and that the broadcast is terrible. If I owned a network in the US, I'd hire Wayne and Richard and their producer.

Taiwan games are on at an almost perfect time for me. My wife is at work, I'm not in a rush. I can see continuing to follow them even after MLB is back. I wish the games were a little faster but I like the less reliable defense and non-TTO game.
   373. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 13, 2020 at 09:41 AM (#5949988)
Guardians and Brothers are playing a relatively crisp game today.

Meanwhile, if you were sure the Lions were finally gonna beat the Monkeys, their 15-4 lead is now 15-10, and it's only the 6th.
   374. bunyon Posted: May 13, 2020 at 09:58 AM (#5949991)
I never assume the Lions lead is safe.
   375. Jefferson Manship (Dan Lee) Posted: May 13, 2020 at 10:04 AM (#5949994)
I really like the Brothers' monochromatic yellow uniforms. I feel like they should have stars on their caps and Zhan Zi-Xian should wear a t-shirt that says "If you hear any noise it's just me and the boys boppin'" in Mandarin.
   376. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 13, 2020 at 10:08 AM (#5949997)
Guardians burying the Brothers here in the bottom of the 8th. Good win for them.

*checks scoreboard*
"Oh, cool, the Guardians and Brothers are playing a close game that doesn't have a basketball score!"
*opens stream*
*Fubon immediately scores four runs*
   378. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 13, 2020 at 10:10 AM (#5950001)
hahaha, yeah....they should increase the international signing limit strictly for relief pitchers.
   379. Jefferson Manship (Dan Lee) Posted: May 13, 2020 at 10:15 AM (#5950006)
Watching these bullpens, it makes total sense that C.C. Lee would be a dominant CPBL stopper. He was a perfectly cromulent MLB bullpen arm, which is light years ahead of most relievers in this league.
   380. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 13, 2020 at 10:19 AM (#5950008)
In addition to the real grand slam, there was also a little-league style grand slam for the Lions today that I am trying to track down the highlight of because it's hilarious.
   381. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 13, 2020 at 10:26 AM (#5950013)
Yes, I found it!

Watch and enjoy the full glory of the CPBL.

Wouldn't be the CPBL without a bullpen meltdown in a game that seemed over.

LOL, HBP! Tying run to the plate.

Another win for over bettors
   389. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 15, 2020 at 07:43 AM (#5950717)
So apparently after getting blasted in the local Taiwanese press for the length of games, the CPBL has promised starting today to enforce their pitch clock rule. Let's see if it makes a difference. Someone on twitter posted this eye popping list:

Average time of 9-Inning CPBL game by every 10 yrs

1990: 2hr 46 mins

2000: 3hrs 1 min

2010: 3hrs 7 mins

2020: 3hrs 45 mins

Something has gotta be done to at least get back toward 2010 levels.
   390. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 15, 2020 at 07:45 AM (#5950718)
Also, today is they day teams were allowed to go up to 2,000 fans AND start serving limited concessions (pre-packed bento boxes I believe). I have Fubon vs. Rakuten on and it ALMOST sounds like a real legit crowd in the building! I've also got Kia vs. Dooson on my TV at the same time. Love my morning baseball.
   391. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 15, 2020 at 07:53 AM (#5950719)
Since nobody is using the KBO thread I'll say absolutely sweet slide into home by that Kia baserunner.

Sosa's split looks pretty legit.
   393. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: May 15, 2020 at 09:31 AM (#5950734)
Both games in the 9th innning at the 3 hour mark....definitely seems like an improvement.

It was noticeably better today, but SSS applies of course. Two solid games.
