The Columnists: Allen: Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant

Even with the death of noted va-va-voomstress, Liz Renay (of Belinsky’s Beauties fame)...Maury Allen chugs on!

Forget 9/11, the war in Iraq or a burdensome tax. This was BIG. “The family of the late Mickey Mantle is shocked and outraged by Bill Liederman’s conduct covering the Mickey Mantle name in Mickey Mantle’s restaurant and replacing it with Ted Williams,” wrote a Mantle family lawyer.

Public outrage was incredible. Nasty phone calls filled the restaurant lines. Vicious emails exploded on their computer screen. People burst into the place screaming obscenities. A voice mail announced, “You’re dead, your kids are dead., your days on this earth are numbered, you money-grabbing Hebe.”

Liederman, who loves a joke almost as he loves a good hamburger, finally backed off. He had learned a lesson, especially a lesson about Yankee fans. “You never tread on the sacred ground of Yankee lore. It just isn’t done,” PR pal Marty Appel told Burger Bill.

“You’re dead, your kids are dead., your days on this earth are numbered, you money-grabbing Hebe.”

Stay classy, Yankee fans.

Can't forget 9/11

I'm surprised a mainstream columnist could form the words.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Mickey Mantle's" was never Mickey Mantle's. He sold the use of his name to it, made appearances there (for pay?) and probably never needed to pick up a check, but it was never HIS restaurant in the same sense that Rusty Staub's restaurant was actually owned by Rusty Staub, right?

Another column angling for a few complimentary meals.

VLMJ - That was my understanding too. Mickey got free booze and a steak.

If a restaurant's name had to be true advertising, Mickey Mantle's wold be "Like Denny's but with Memorabilia"...

You can get anything you want at Mickey Mantle's restaurant--exceptin' Mickey.

Truly awful food at Mickey Mantle's. I don't think it's the best source but IIRC Zagat's routinely ranks it among the worst in the city, food scores in the TGI Friday's area.

Ah, its not that bad. It is kinda strange when the hostess seats you under the table.

LIke most things in New York, it's overrated and overpriced. But the waffle fries are legitimately excellent.
