Ohtani is such a savage. He's starting the game as a pitcher, throws a shutout top of the first, then in the bottom of the inning gets an RBI single, steals second, and scores on a bloop single.

It occurs to me that that sequence of events may have never happened in major league history.

Mets salvage a split against the Braves, losing 2-0 and winning 1-0.

Edwin Diaz throwing one 101 mph fastball after another, like a man possessed.

The Mariners' Darren McCaughan threw five innings of no hit ball at Coors Field in his major league debut last week. Tonight, he's been torched by the Astros for five hits and six runs in the top of the first inning. Welcome to the big leagues, I guess...

07.26... Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Athletics are on the verge of acquiring Andrew Chafin from the Cubs.
Spin: Mark Feinsand was first to report that a deal involving Chafin was close, and Rosenthal has the destination. The southpaw has been excellent this season with a 2.06 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 37/12 K/BB ratio over 39 1/3 innings. Chafin has a $5.25 million mutual option in his deal for 2022.

Trevor Story just took an Ohtani 97 MPH fastball off his left hand. You could hear the scream on every mic in the stadium. That's not awesome.

Chafin's been fun to watch and his gruff 1970s ballplayer aesthetic has made him kind of a folksy presence. Sad to see him go.

McCutchen - really good player, really great guy.

entered tonight with a 132 career OPS+ - 16th among active players and same as Gwynn, Morgan, Palmeiro, MVaughn, Canseco, Edmonds, Colavito, Juan Gon, Ol' Reliable, and others. that's an eclectic bunch.

never 200 hits, never 100 RBI, never more than 31 HR, never 35 SB, 100 R only once.

oh, and never a sub-104 OPS+ season even with all his injuries.

turns 35 in October. would be cool to see him come to Pittsburgh in a few years and bring it all back home.

Javy Baez just walked it off on the first pitch against Amir Garrett. Javy was yelling at Garrett from the moment he stepped into the box, then lifted a long fly ball to drive in the winning run from 3rd, and then yelled at Garrett as he walked as slowly as possible to first. So that was ... something.
