The HoF Review - by Joe Pos

Joe Posnanski’s take on the Modern Era Committee’s inductions.

In very general terms, Joe seems a bit surprised by how Ted Simmons got in but other players didn’t.

Ultimately, Hall of Fame voting is an extremely tactical affair.  To me, Simmons got in because he was on the brink of getting in, and the members of the committee thought of him that way.

It’s not necessarily ideal that this is how the Hall operates, be it at the BBWAA or at the Veterans Committee level, but the structural limitations of voting (only 10 candidates for the BBWAA with a 10 year limit and a 5% floor to remain on the ballot, only 4 votes for the Veterans Committee members who only get to vote every 2 or 3 years and aren’t necessarily around for the next vote of that sub-committee) guides the actions of voters when it’s not an absolute, slam dunk candidate.

Pos’ writing on this betrays the same sense of fandom that we all share. He wrote a previous column that had Whitaker, Tommy John and Murphy as his choices.

Why he is perplexed about how the committee works is beyond me.

Trammel, lee smith and Jack morris all had strong showings on the writers ballot. Baines was a stitch up which has happened from time to time on vets committees, and Simmons and miller both came within one vote on previous committees.

It looks to me like Evans, Whitaker and Parker will get a strong look next time and all of them have strong cases. In some ways it makes sense that a guy like Evans gets 8 votes from this committee and then maybe 10-11 from a different group of 16 and then 12 from yet a different group. It’s validation from 48 people which makes more sense.

I’ve warmed up to Parker - great player for 5 years and 2700 hits.

But this year, [Dwight Evans] not only made it on the ballot but he got eight votes, the most of any player not elected, and that puts him in amazing shape to get elected the next time Modern Era Committee meets.

Joe states Simmons case in the article.
