Yesterday, I asked which Dodger would get injured and then both Turner and Muncy left after getting hit by pitches. It doesn’t sound like there was anything broken, though, at least.

incredibly clutch performance by NYM Stroman today.

the Mets bullpen is absolutely in tatters after getting a total of just 5 combined innings from Mets starters over the previous 3 games (all of them close).

so all Stroman does is toss 8 scoreless innings of 1-hit ball in a 7-0 win over the Reds today. rare off-day tomorrow, then 18 more days without a break - and yet another doubleheader in that stretch to boot.

Mariners reliever Darren McCaughan, making his major league debut, goes to a 3-0 count - then swings at the 3-0 pitch and taps the ball back to the pitcher for an easy out. Can't do that, rook.

The Red Sox have done many, many things right so far this season and luckily much of it has come off. However, continuing to play, much less batting 2nd today, Danny Santana(he of the .570 OPS) is not one of them. I'm sure Danny is a nice enough fellow, however I don't what him and his .236 OBP batting 2nd on my team, ever.

the Padres boxscore lists "Reiss Knehr" as tonight's game 2 starter, and a reliever as "Nabil Crismatt" - but no way those can be real names.

Horrible no-good called strike three against Dylan Carlson on a 3-2 count to end the 5th inning in St. Louis, with the Cubs up 1-0. The pitch was a fastball several inches off the outside edge that was never a strike.

The correct ball 4 call would have loaded the bases for the Cardinals' hottest hitter, Paul Goldschmidt.

Oh well.

Hard to believe, the Cardinals starting pitchers have the best era in MLB since June 28th. I guess when your starters only go three innings most of the time, their era might be a bit low?

Arenando can play a bit of defense.

2-2 in the last of the 7th, Florian on second after a stolen base with 2 outs after LeMahieu got rung out on a Gift Strike. Stanton gets 2 quick strikes, looking feeble as all getout. Then an opposite field single and an Odor mezzanine shot and all of a sudden it's 5-2 Yanks. Who would've guessed it?

Apparently Yermin Mercedes announced his retirement on Instagram today. Retirement from baseball, not Instagram.

I knew that after a bumpy start, Hendricks has been the usual Hendricks lately. What I hadn't realized is that he's 12-4 on the year, those 12 wins tied for the NL lead with Urias. 12-4 for a 500 team is mighty good, 16 decisions in 19 starts is almost unheard of these days.** His most recent terrible start was on May 9. Since then 12 starts, 10-0, 2.48 ERA.

He's a thin man's Rick Reuschel.

** I'm not gonna check, feel free.
   12. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2021 at 10:20 PM (#6029959)
He's Hendricks so I won't complain but he was lucky to get out of the 6th with the lead (2 deep flies), here he is batting with 2 outs and runner on 2nd in the 7th (Ks).

you are ahead of me on the broadcast, only has one out here. That Edman bunt was horrendous. (oops, just realized you were talking about the top of the 7th, not the bottom of the seventh.... '''doohh'''I saw batting and my mind said battling)

Bader with a 3 for 3 tonight to tie the game up.

10 - yeah I’m really wondering what the other shoe to drop with that story is.

What a strange career to date. Dude was in the Pecos League at one point (I cannot overstate how low the quality of baseball in that league is, relative to most domestic professional competition), worked his way up to minor league journeyman status (was a minor league rule 5 pick, which is a bad sign for how you’re valued, though a step up from where he was), to fringe prospect, to fringe major leaguer…
And then this year. After the Astudillo incident, he was hitting .364/.410/.574 as a starter. Fluky/lucky, sure, but he was hitting. Afterward: .162/.236/.207 - sent to the minors (where he then resumed hitting). I doubt that that day is why he’s leaving baseball but … weird.

Carlson gives the Cardinals the lead. Wainwright in position for a win now.

Lord knows what terrible thing we are about to find out about Mercedes

The Yankees' YES Network had a graphic tonight that is the best innovation I have seen in... forever.

it's called "Bullpen Budget," and it shows how many pitches per night every reliever has thrown in the last 5 days, I think it was.

if it's your team, you know which guy can't pitch back-to-back, who can't go 3 straight, etc. but even for the opposing team, you get a feel for who might not be available.

I would love to see that in, say, the 7th inning, for both teams in every ballgame.

the weird part is that I didn't notice a sponsor - and this is a franchise that, if you take a dump in the men's room at Yankee Stadium, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a motion sensor that bombards you with a stool softener commercial, or one for a high-fiber cereal.

lord have mercy. gallegos gets the cubs down to their last strike and ... hits the batter.

70th hit batter this year.

   20. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2021 at 11:30 PM (#6029970)

... and now the game is tied.

this team is killing me. honest to god.
   21. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2021 at 11:33 PM (#6029971)
At least Hendricks is off the hook.
   22. The Duke Posted: July 21, 2021 at 11:34 PM (#6029972)
The cardinals can’t do anything right in the last two months.
   23. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2021 at 11:38 PM (#6029973)
Some time to kill now so ... poor Jarred Kelenic. The Ms have snuck him back into the majors. Unfortunately he's picked up where he left off ... 5 games, 3 for 20 with 9 Ks, 0 BB and 0 XBH.

But the Ms definitely my "team having a solid season that I probably can't name more than 2 players on" for 2021.
   24. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2021 at 11:39 PM (#6029974)
Do you guys even know the batter's box is not part of the strike zone?
   25. phredbird Posted: July 21, 2021 at 11:40 PM (#6029975)

i am speechless. f u c k i n g speechless.
   26. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2021 at 11:41 PM (#6029976)
At least he found the opposite batter's box on that first one.
   27. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2021 at 11:54 PM (#6029977)
Maybe Yermin is stepping away to work on his marriage to Julianna Zobrist.
   28. Walt Davis Posted: July 21, 2021 at 11:56 PM (#6029978)
Not a big fan of this move. If you weren't gonna live/die with Thompson, Kimbrel should have started the inning.
   29. phredbird Posted: July 22, 2021 at 12:28 AM (#6029980)

welp ... cubs return the favor in the tenth by gumming up a scoring opportunity, and cards score in the bottom of the inning.

good night and good luck.
   30. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 22, 2021 at 12:41 AM (#6029984)
Kenley Jansen just shat the bed.
   31. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: July 22, 2021 at 01:15 AM (#6029987)
And it’s not Coors Field this time. I guess Jansen is bad again.
