The Lerner family will explore selling the Washington Nationals

The family of real estate magnate Ted Lerner, which 16 years ago purchased the Washington Nationals from Major League Baseball and oversaw a rebuilding process that eventually resulted in a World Series championship, has begun the process of exploring potential changes in the club’s ownership structure, including the possibility of selling the team.

Mark D. Lerner, Ted Lerner’s son who now serves as the club’s managing principal owner, told The Washington Post in a statement that the family has hired New York investment bank Allen & Company to research potential investors, and possibly buyers, for the Nationals.

“This is an exploratory process, so there is no set timetable or expectation of a specific outcome,” Mark Lerner said in the statement. “The organization is as committed as ever to their employees, players, fans, sponsors and partners and to putting a competitive product on the field.”

The team said no options have been eliminated. Though a full transfer of ownership is possible, the Lerners also could bring on additional partners, team spokeswoman Jennifer Giglio said.

Elon Musk might buy 10% and then tweet nice things about them

I dunno if Big Don has the liquidity needed to buy an MLB club in 2022, but it would be fun. The Nationals fanbase in DC is basically all journalists, politicians, and think tankers. It would drive them crazy.

Obviously he'd put up about $75k to be principal owner and his cult would fund the rest.

This is brilliant. Jeffrey Loria was tired of being the butt of all jokes as the worst owner in the history of sport. Let’s bring Big Don in to the very franchise Loria ran into the ground, and see what happens!

Trump: well we had another draft and they are terrible ballplayers. Some of them may be good but we need to stop all these guys from getting all
This money and contributing nothing.

It's a good fit

#5, one of the tests of a cult is resistance to and attempting to stifle contrasting information. As team blue apostates like Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibbi have noted, team blue has sadly become all speech restriction all the time.

He'd tweet out poll questions like "Would you like to see 4 outs per inning instead of 3?"

That's idiotic.

Trump will buy the Nationals and promptly try to convince his fellow owners to change the start of the baseball season to September to go head-to-head with the NFL…

This is perfect. Libs instantly turn a thread about an owner possibly selling his team into an anti-Trump rant, because everything has to be about him. Over a year after leaving office The Donald still lives rent-free in their heads and hearts, which I’m sure gives his considerable ego a nice boost.

Reminds me of teenage girls still complaining ten years later about the boy they dumped in High School.

I see zero rants in this thread, and the first vaguely political comment is from a righty enjoying the thought of liberal agita. But go on...

Why are all the early 20th century ballplayers who post here out of their minds?

As far as who might actually be interested in buying all or part of the Nationals, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos may lead the pack. Amazon is opening a HQ in Arlington, VA, and Bezos already owns The Washington Post, as well as the largest house in DC. Ted Leonsis, owner of the Capitals, Wizards & Mystics is also a possibility, and everyone who came up short on other franchise purchases seems to be mentioned.
   18. JL72 Posted: April 12, 2022 at 04:50 PM (#6071357)
Leonsis is an interesting possibility. The Caps and the Nats have had a great relationship, with each showing up at a game of the other to show off their championship hardware.
