The Lost Career of Luke Easter

He’s much like the fictional superstar Roy Hobbs in the American Arthurian legend of a baseball book and movie The Natural — a left-handed hitter with incredible power, known for hitting towering home runs whose entry into the majors was delayed until his mid-30s. He’s a bit like Kevin Costner’s Crash Davis of Bull Durham fame, a prolific minor-league home run hitter. He’s even a little bit Satchel Paige, who was always coy about his real age.

#2: It's a shame we don't have enough data to debate whether Appling or Easter was the best Luke of all-time.

Skywalker had a fast start, but really declined fast. Kind of the opposite of Easter.

Good lord, the man was playing AAA at 48 (or "48"). At 46, he still put up a line of 281/379/514. At 42, 307/415/600 with 33 doubles and 38 HR. Bonds was just the 2nd Luke Easter.

Matthew and Mark were a good 1-2 at the top of the order, but Luke hit third back in the pre-analytic days when you put your best bat in the #3 slot...

That's the first thing I've enjoyed from Zombie Deadspin, although I've hardly visited so perhaps they are doing good things I'm unaware of
