The Marlins should lose draft picks and international spending room

The current blow-up of the coronavirus in the Marlins locker room is threatening to turn the eastern divisions into a mockery. The Sunday Marlins/Phillies game probably shouldn’t have been played, and games across the eastern seaboard are being endangered. Rumor has it that a portion of the onset sprung from the Marlins going out clubbing in Atlanta.

At some point, a team ought to either be responsible for their decisions, or their decisions have very few repercussions. If Manfred’s response (I haven’t heard one in about 72 hours) is “Tsk. Tsk.”, that’s no level of tough love. It’s apparent that Manfred’s job is to allow all 30 ownership groups to make scads of money, but if misdeeds by one club crushes the credibility of the other 29, punishment should be justified.

At some point, Manfred will levy a harsh punishment against someone, right? If he doesn’t, cheating and disrespecting the game will be encouraged, more so than they already have been. Fortunately, Manfred has two very easy methods of punishing teams for actions that are, to use a predecessor of Manfred’s phrase: “Not in the best interest of baseball.

Each team has an international spending pool. Each team gets draft choices every June. They can be whisked away, at least in part. As poor at discipline as Manfred is, he’s done both.

The Marlins should lose at least half their international spending pool for the next cycle, and multiple draft picks, for harm already done to the game. Everyone in the Marlins clubhouse ought to grasp the gravity of the current situation, whether a player, executive, or support staff. If the Marlins lose half their 2021 draft class, this is serious. If they only lose one choice, it’s a frivolity.

The Marlins would get punished harder if they threw at the Astros.

I'm all for crushing the Marlins but has it been established that their outbreak is due to negligence? Does Manfred even have power to punish over a Covid outbreak? All I've heard is the rumor about titties and beer in Atlanta. It sure seems like someone screwed something up given that MLB has hardly any active positives outside of the Marlins.

no.

Do we have any reason to think that the Marlins were uniquely negligent rather than uniquely unlucky?

"The Marlins should have their draft picks taken away," in BBTF parlance.

Is there anything in the history of this franchise, under current ownership or past, to suggest that they would consider being forced to spend less money as any sort of punishment?

This is a lot more interesting than stories about chicken and beer in Boston.

pro athletes love them some "gentleman's clubs" - and Atlanta and Houston top the list for many.

The idea of punishing the Marlins is absurd. If not them, it was inevitably going to be some other team. The whole insane attempt to play games is to blame.

News out of Philadelphia where the Marlins have been holed up for over a week: Team is getting sleeper buses to take the infected players/personnel back to Miami. That's a long ride

Rest will stay, then head to Baltimore, NY and Buffalo for what will be a really long road trip

Holy ####. So they are going to take a bunch of people infected with a highly transmittable and serious virus and rather than keeping them in one place they are going to have them drive through seven states presumably involving periodic stops for gas and whatever else? This is as bad an idea as I think it is right?

Eh, it's an 18-20 hour drive. Assuming the buses have toilet facilities just keep everyone on board for the duration. It shouldn't be an issue for the drivers to just pump gas when no other vehicles are at the pump.

As one, of many here I'm guessing, who have taken an 18-20 hour bus ride, I'd hate to have made it to "The Show," only to experience this sort of soul-crushing. Bubble or GTFO, I imagine many Marlins, Cards, ??? are/will be screaming in coming hours (18-20).

Also, the bus explodes if it goes under 55 miles per hour.

I wonder how they’re going to choose what bus driver gets that plumb gig.

Totally with Astro on this one. Aside from that, where is the authority in the Special Agreement?

Yeah, the bus driver locked in a bus for 18-20 hours with a bunch of infected people is going to get out at some truck stop with the expectation that no one wants to use another pump. I guess they can put up a sign on the bus saying "COVID bus, stay away" which I'm sure the owner of the gas station and any restaurants they stop at to get food are going to LOVE having pull in. Presumably this is going to require two bus drivers at least or they are going to have to stop a few hours somewhere to let the driver sleep. Also flat tires and engine problems are not completely heard of.

I drove back from Florida in March. I'm a single guy, live alone, was driving on my own so not exactly the same but man, that's a tough one. You're asking the players to stay on the bus for 20 hours? That's not easy. Yeah, they can pull to the side and get out and stretch their legs but why do we want people infected with a serious disease doing this?

The Marlins had 18 players test positive, and are reportedly using several sleeper buses to transport the players who tested positive. Sounds like they aren’t packed in that densely, and I suspect the buses are deemed less risky than flying. Don’t see any reason to criticize.

As far as punishing the Marlins. No, it’s a ridiculous idea absent any evidence the Marlins deliberately violated the protocol. Players exercising poor judgment doesn’t meet that standard.

Now that think more about this, it's like the end of "Midnight Cowboy." Disturbingly so.
   22. tshipman Posted: July 31, 2020 at 02:00 PM (#5967156)
MLB is the one who came up with the plan. Don't see why we should punish the Marlins for the inevitable consequence.
   23. JRVJ Posted: July 31, 2020 at 02:14 PM (#5967158)
Don't know why nobody has mentioned this, but ideally, the Marlins should have two drivers for each bus on this trip, and both drivers should both have already gotten COVID-19 and recovered.

That way the second driver can take over for the first one every 3 hours or so.

COVID bus will be refueled in transit by a mobile tanker.

The driver is wearing a Stadium Pal.
   25. SoSH U at work Posted: July 31, 2020 at 02:39 PM (#5967169)
Serious question: if you have six people on a bus, all of whom have tested positive, does it matter if they socially distance from one another? Can someone with COVID be harmed by further exposure to the coronavirus?
   26. JRVJ Posted: July 31, 2020 at 02:43 PM (#5967170)
25, not AFAIK.
   27. Karl from NY Posted: July 31, 2020 at 02:54 PM (#5967173)
You can't penalize the Marlins for this. If that's the consequence, then the message everyone else gets is to cover up and hide any positive tests.

At most you can penalize an individual for a protocol violation. But it has to be consistently for that and not for any ensuing test results. Protocol doesn't make contagion impossible either, you can do everything right and still end up with it.

The COVID on the bus goes round and round, round and round, round and round...
