The night ‘Macarena’ took over Yankee Stadium

Some 50,000 screaming men, women and children came from all over to take part in Macarena Night. The goal? Break the record for the largest line of people to perform the ‘90s dance craze at once.

“Everybody just went absolutely bat-[expletive] crazy,” Eric Stangel, comedy writer and incredibly ecstatic Macarena Night attendee, told me.

Macarena Night only happened because the Yankees couldn’t stand losing. (Of course they couldn’t).

Back in June of that season, the Mariners had set the record for the most people doing the dance when 37,000 joined in at the Kingdome. The Yankees not only planned to beat the record, but they wanted to do it during a game against the Mariners.

“It was a brilliant stroke,” Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay told me in a call. “I think the person who came up with it was [Marketing SVP] Debbie Tymon. She’s really smart with this sort of stuff and she came up with the idea.”

“Yeah the Yankees, in a screw-you to the Mariners—who they were playing that night—were like, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna break the record,’” Stangel remembered.

I was at this game with a few friends. We were in high school at the time -- the first one of us had just gotten his driver's license so it may have been the first game we went to without someone's parents -- and we had no idea about the Macarena promotion until we got there. We just picked that game because those of us who weren't Yankee fans wanted to see the Mariners and Griffey while they were in town. It was actually a very exciting game, as the article describes (the M's came from behind to win, 6-5). The Macarena thing was an amusing footnote.

The Macarena was a mainstream phenomenon for a brief period. What killed the Macarena? Some say it was Al Gore. If that’s the case then Gore had three great contributions: killing the Macarena, inventing the internet, and warning the world about Man Bear Pig. But I think baseball played a role in (thankfully) killing the Macarena. As much as we love baseball, it’s not considered the “cool” sport and having stadiums compete over who has 37,000 stadium baseball fans supposedly doing some dance only to be topped by 50,000 was lame. Add in the grounds crew guys trying to have their 15 seconds of fame and I think baseball bears some blame (or credit) for killing off the Macarena.

About 3-4 years after the Macarena had it’s mainstream run, I was at a college Christmas party for a club I was part of. Two odd songs were played by the DJ, the first was the Beavis & Butthead with Cher version of “I’ve Got You Babe”, which no one danced to & was out of place. Later in the party, the Macarena came on and I figured no one would dance to this tired song but I was wrong. The dance floor filled up. Most of the students/club members were in their early 20s, but there were a few exceptions. We had this creepy dude about 40 who looked like the WWF commentator Gorilla Monsoon and used to hit on all the 20ish year old women in the club. Well my memories of the Macarena will forever be baseball playing it’s roll in killing the dance and the sweaty Gorilla Monsoon doppelgänger doing a passionate and surprisingly impressive job of dancing the Macarena.

I think Mike Myers may have killed the Macarena when Dr. Evil danced it to prove to his son that he was "hip".
