Maine threw 12 straight balls to open his start Saturday night against the Florida Marlins. He tossed 40 pitches in a three-run first inning and the Mets ultimately lost 7-5 at Sun Life Stadium to slip under .500 for the first time since April 23.

So, I guess a Mets loss and a Nats loss is a net positive.
I'm sure the numbers are against me, but I'm completely fed-up with Collins' relentless platooning. I basically never want to see Eric Campbell hit again, I rarely ever want to see Nieuwenhuis hit and I never want to see Cuddyer hit for Duda. These guys are going to have little or no role for the team if it makes the playoffs, so why are we relying on them in games that are starting to feel rather important in trying to make it. Can't we just let our best guys play, more or less? Is that so ####### hard?

Magic number for the mets at six. Even if they lose until the final series and the nats win until then, the mets win with a sweep.

I think i can accept Cuddyer hitting for Duda against a lefty, but I just never want to see Eric Campbell again.
Harveys, I wanted to like Willie Randolph as a manager because he was a wonderful player, but he was so determinedly "old school" it was just depressing. David Wright had to "earn"
an important spot in the batting order in 2005, even though he'd had the best OPS+ on the team as a rookie. Jose Reyes had to be more "professional" (ie, less demonstratively joyful)
on the field. Of course, the biggest failing of those Mets teams was simply the ancient and fragile pitching staff they had, but Willie's determination to never appear even pleased,
much less happy, and his need for his players to be as poker-faced as he was, made him very difficult to root for.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, rely on the Orioles. It's a famous saying.
You know, I went back to look up the 2004 Mets just now. It wasn't an historic collapse like those in 07 and 08, but this team must have been such a huge bummer. It was over .500 (44-43) at the All Star break. After the All-Star break, it went 27-48, or a ~.318 winning percentage. It had the very young Wright and Reyes, but other than that, it was a roster that would have been a powerhouse 10 years earlier, and was terrible in 2004. It was the team's 3rd straight losing season (not even the worst of those). There must have been a moment in late June or early July when there was a lot of hope floating around Queens. And then . . .
Well, that's why there's a self-immolation thread, I guess.

#520, the autoignition wasn't over the tanking of the season, it was over the (perceived, anyway) tanking of the future. 2004 marked the first time since, well, ever in my fandom that there looked like there might soon be a good Mets team that wasn't reliant on a bunch of has-beens. And management threw that to "go for it" because they were only 2 games out. But when you are 2 games out with 3 teams ahead of you, you aren't really even close.
The fact that "going for it" also backfired completely was just a crap cherry on top of the #### sundae.

In fact, IF they make the playoffs this will be the first Mets team since I started really following them in '97 to make the postseason with a roster that is not almost entirely over the hill.
The '99 team, only Alfonzo, Ordonez, Dotel and Benitez were under 30 among "regulars". The entire rotation was 34 or older.
The '06 team had Wright and Reyes, Beltran was only 29, but everyone else was older than dirt. The rotation made the '99 team's look young for most of the season.
The fact that "going for it" also backfired completely was just a crap cherry on top of the #### sundae.
Among the things that drove me nuts, was seeing how badly the Met brain trust blew the talent evaluation portion of their jobs- they kept talking about Zambrano's "electric stuff" - but hello, we have eyes, we can see, we saw him in TB pitching against the Yankees, we see him now in a Met uniform - Mark 1 eyeball says, "mediocre stuff and poor command" (which, surprise surprise is pretty much what his stat line said as well)- they kept telling fans things that not only were not true, but stuff that Met fans could readily see for themselves were not true- in a way it was really insulting. It wasn't just Zambrano, when they traded for Benson they publicly pretended he had te same stuff he'd had before TJ surgery- well I'd see him when the Pirates first brought him up and Nope, not even close.
We traded Kazmir's career, Jose Bautista's career, and Ty Wiggington's career for two 3rd starters (I'm being charitable) who had already LOST their stuff before throwing a single pitch for the Mets- and talked about those two guys as if they were the prospects they'd been before their [failed] TJ surgeries- As a fan it was very disheartening to realize that the team I was following really did not have a single ####### clue- Phillips was gone and yet somehow they were even worse
Since this is the autoignition thread... at this point in 2007 the Mets were 1.5 games up... having gone from a 7 game lead to a 1.5 game lead in 7 days, the Mets seemingly righted the ship, won 3 in a row and were 2.5 up with 7 left... and of course lost 6 of those 7
