The ‘purge’ Mets’ Brodie Van Wagenen, other GMs should fear

“This year the managers, next year the GM purge.”

These were the words of a top official from an AL team shortly after learning Gabe Kapler had been fired by the Phillies. Eight teams are pursuing a new manager, more than one-quarter of the league.

Just the Red Sox are looking to fill their head of baseball operations department after the dismissal of Dave Dombrowski less than a year after Boston won the World Series. The Giants could hire a GM, but that title no longer assures authority over the baseball department. President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi will have the final say on the hire and personnel decisions.

So who is on the hot seat clock as the offseason begins for the baseball version of “The Purge?”

I don't see anybody in the ALE that should be under pressure.

ALC -- Det will be horrible again next year and will be under pressure to "do something" after another disastrous season. CHW are likely looking for another step forward but Reinsdorf has always been a pretty loyal guy so might stick with Hahn even if he doesn't get more wins.

ALW -- Eppler and Dipoto under pressure. I can't believe Daniels is still there. Maybe someday Beane will tire of GM'ing and move himself fully upstairs.

NLE -- Klentak is clearly in trouble but I don't imagine BvW is in that much risk. Rizzo and AA look safe to me. I can't even tell you who's in charge in Miami and nobody cares what happens there.

NLC -- StL, Milw, CHC all look safe. Cinci is likely a bit disappointed that they finished under 500 this year and the big trade for the Dodgers didn't help at all. I couldn't have told you who their GM is (Nick Krall) but it might be Dick Williams who's really in charge and he's been there a long time. It's hard to tell -- Williams was PBO and GM but later relinquised the GM title to Krall. I can't believe Huntington is still in charge in Pitt but they just signed him to a 4-year extension last offseason so he's safe.

NLW -- LAD may turn over this offseason but, either way, is safe for next offseason. I don't think Zaidi will be under serious pressure -- hard to imagine this wasn't all laid out in his original interview, surely the owners were on board with this past offseason's lacklustre approach. And he's got 4 years left on his contract. I don't know if it's the manager or the GM but I keep expecting the DBacks to fall apart but they don't. I can't believe Preller and Bridich still have jobs.

So I think my summary is: Det (assuming they stink again), LAA, Sea, Tex, Phi, Cincy, SD and Col are the hot seats; CHW might be warm. Other than SD, none look like particularly promising jobs to take.

This is why taking the Padres job is dicey. Probably means Ausmus gets it since he’s used to being fired quickly

Huntington took over in Pittsburgh in late 2007. I think that these are all of the position players signed as amateurs (plus Jung Ho Kang) by him who have gone on to generate positive bWAR for the major league team:

Frazier 7.8 bWAR
Mercer 7.7
Kang 5.8
Polanco 5.8
Alvarez 5.6
Bell 5.1
Newman 2.2
Stallings 1.7
Moroff 0.7
Ngoepe 0.1
T. Sanchez 0.1

42.6 total bWAR, 3.5 per year. Mike Trout spotted them a year, and he's still 30 wins ahead of the whole organization. Huntington has to go yesterday.

That is a depressing list in #3. Bill Smith got canned by the Twins but he still brought in Sano, Kepler and Polanco all in one signing period.

I don't imagine BvW is in that much risk

Forget it, Walt, it's the Post...

In my mind, Gregory Polanco is a good hitter, but he has a career 100 OPS+ and only one season where he's hit very well.
