The reality of the Pirates business model: ‘We’re always going to have limitations’ – The Athletic

A lot of the criticisms by players about teams not paying veterans is a lot of hogwash. Regarding the Pirates payroll history, I can’t believe ownership is really committed to winning. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure they want to win. They just don’t want to spend money to actually help do it.

Could the declining attendance stem from a perception that the front office and ownership are not committed to doing whatever it takes to win?

I don’t want to guess or speculate for someone else, for what they believe or feel. What I absolutely do know is that the front office and ownership are absolutely committed, and we’re working really hard to field what we believe is a better team, a good team, an improving team that has the opportunity to win in 2019. … I feel good about the players we do have. There’s always going to be players we don’t have. I’m focused on the players we do have.

I think that when Nutting brought Coonelly and Huntington in to run the team in 2007, they thought that they were going to build a power based on player development. I think that certain things have undermined that view now: (1) you can't spend what you want on amateur players; (2) they weren't as cutting edge on technology as they assumed; and, (3) they turned out to be ordinary, at best, in turning amateur players into major leaguers. So they've swapped contending every year to aiming for around .500 and hoping everything goes their way every few years. Nutting's only 56 and says he wants to pass the team on to his daughters, so I guess Pirate fans should make sure they have a second team stashed away somewhere.

That one has been a disaster for the fun of the game and for the fun of watching teams get built. The union never should have agreed to it. Essentially, the older union members sold out the younger ones, and would-be ones, so we shouldn't really have a lot of sympathy for the slow labor market for geezers. Karma and all.
