The reason Reymin Guduan was suspended

Dean Deetz is a little bit of a character, and talks a lot of smack. He was giving Reymin Guduan The Bidness about not being able to throw a strike. Guduan responded by throwing a shoe at Deetz and missed (badly, apparently), to which Deetz responded “See?” That is legitimately funny. What happened next is not. Guduan picked up a bat, swung it, and hit Deetz in the head. Guduan apparently didn’t get a great swing on it, but “it definitely dazed” Deetz.

Guduan was removed from the clubhouse, but came back later, this time with a knife. “He didn’t do anything with it, but he stood at his locker and glared at Deetz.” No one called the police, but the Astros did suspend Guduan. That, by any standard of the law, is assault. You’ll notice on Round Rock’s website that Dean Deetz did not pitch between July 26 and August 5, which was a span of eight games in nine days.

He can't pitch too good, and he's not much better with the bat, but if you need a guy to stand in the outfield and menace folks with a hunting knife he's your man.

My god. How can you do anything but (a) call the police and (b) immediately release the maniac?

I mis-read the intro and thought he was only suspended 9 days.

Not wanting to get stabbed seems like a good reason.

Anyone remember any other examples of similar incidents? I'm pretty sure someone got suspended for bringing a gun into the Texas Rangers' clubhouse in the early days of the franchise, and I know Gilbert Arenas was suspended for doing that when he was with the Wizards/Bullets.

Emil Brown shot a reporter in the eye with an airsoft pellet gun in the locker room.

When I read the first paragraph, I thought it was some kind of joke.

Chico Ruiz waved a gun at Alex Johnson when they were on the Angels. They'd been close enough at one point that Johnson made Ruiz godfather of one of his children.

Lenny Randle choked his manager (was it Lucchesi?).

The NHBA quotes an article from the 1970s that claimed when Bobby Grich was a rookie he attacked and tried to choke Earl Weaver for pinch-hitting for him.

I'm sure Grich was pissed off and screaming, but I wouldn't want to bet on the part about him choking Weaver would check out.
