The Signal: To Africa With Love: Man on a Mission

Catching up with Kevin Malone…the Ugandan Giant

uh, Dodger.

Among the many major league baseball caps Kevin has worn, the most consequential was the blue one he sported as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ vice president and general manager. That relationship, however, ended abruptly in 2001 under some negative circumstances and accusations.

“It humbled and broke me in a way that changed my whole life,” he said. “I had been humiliated and criticized around the country and not sure what the future held. I was leaving under much false pretenses and for tainted reasons, which I tried to explain but couldn’t do effectively, and knowing that it would never be fully understood.”

“It hurt so much because I had not experienced failure for a long time. I had been fairly successful along the way and now I was considered a failure. This hurt a lot. ... For a few months I was mad at everyone and unfortunately at God, too.”

Kevin Malone, Christian minister, former professional baseball player and executive and co-owner of Mercedes-Benz of Valencia,

Malone always did come off like he should be selling cars.

At the time, I defended the Dreifort contract passionately. Other than this game he was really good the last couple of starts of the season, giving up 2, 2, 7, 1, 3, 0, 0, 3 runs in each game. He was finally healthy, and had then 550 of 100 ERA+ innings in the previous three years. With his awesome stuff, learning the league, and getting the hell away from LaSorda, this guy was going to be great. Combined with maybe learning a little something from Kevin Brown, this guy was going to be an ace.

Well, ####. That didn't work.
