The Top 25 MLB Players Under 25 Years Old

5. Bo Bichette, SS, Toronto Blue Jays
Baumann rank: 5
Kram rank: 5
Lindbergh rank: 5
Wagner rank: 5

He’s a very good hitter at a premium defensive position. Putting that bat in that lineup spot just makes him so valuable. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Bichette’s game. He’s pluses all around. —Kram

4. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 1B, Toronto Blue Jays
Baumann rank: 3
Kram rank: 4
Lindbergh rank: 4
Wagner rank: 4

The comp I keep drawing is Guerrero’s season now to Bryce Harper’s MVP year. These are the last two players that came up with that level of hype as a hitter. And Harper was a very good player at 19 and 20, and in his age-22 season he put together the 1941 Ted Williams year, adjusted for inflation. Guerrero might be the most talented hitter in the world right now. —Baumann

There was a internet-wide issue for a while, as a LOT of major sites were down this morning around 6:00am.

They all seem to be back up, including this one.

And not one Tiger in the bunch.

Fun guys to watch. The only one of them I’ve seen and hope to not see again is Bo Bichette. Can’t stand the way he plays

9 players on that list are from the NL East, not one a Met. That's not great.

I should probably just listen to the podcast, but this seems like a weird blend of best-right-now and best-over-the-next-5-years. It's not quite either one.

#6 ... I think I agree with that.

Jazz Chisholm jumped out as over-ranked at #15. Things get close down at that level obviously so I suppose I shouldn't make much of it. Anyway, he seems like a very fun player (I've seen one PA I think but he hit a fun triple) but he's already 23, a career pace of about a 3-WAR player and he hasn't hit since he came back from injury (covid?). His 122 OPS+ this year (and career 101) is, at this point, just a torrid 12 games of 378/465/757 in April. We haven't seen enough of him to have a good indicator of what he'll do in the majors ... and it's not like he's 21 where we can at least dream about big jumps in ability.

KBH is another example. He has 121 PA as the greatest player in baseball history (seriously) but he's already 24 and his minor-league record doesn't stand out. Devers is one slot behind, is also 24, had 3 seasons of PAs and we know he can hit pretty well.

The surprise to me was Grisham. I'd noticed he had a nice 2020 but he's had an even nicer 2021. He's also 24 so won't be on this list for long. He's not quite to a full season's worth of PAs yet and he's at 5.2 WAR. He's been the player we thought Buxton would be. He is 1.5 years older than Bichette but they have essentially the same ML performance to date. He's also pretty similar to Robert just ahead of him.

Anyway, I like these lists but we really could use a list based on service time rather than age too. That's certainly what GMs are focused on.I'm not sure the list would look much different as nearly everybody here has at least 3 years of control left but so does 30-yo Luke Voit and 25-yo Cody Bellinger still has as much time left as a couple of the guys on the list. Age matters of course -- but then several of the guys on this list have already suffered substantial injuries.

And I'm still not sure I'd take any of these guys over Trout.

Or one Angel. But they have a 26 year old who is pretty good.
