The twilight of SF Giants legend Madison Bumgarner is getting even uglier

The last time we checked in on Giants legend Madison Bumgarner, it wasn’t good. The three-time World Series winner had crashed out of baseball, cut by the Diamondbacks after giving up 20 runs in his first 16.2 innings of 2023. It was an ugly ending to his Arizona tenure, which was marked by a general failure to launch. After what looked like the start of a Hall of Fame arc with the Giants, he was largely terrible in Arizona, with a 5.32 ERA over 69 starts since 2020.

He went out in classically red-assed Bumgarnerian fashion, screaming, “Shut the f—k up, you #####, f—k you” at a hitter for the crime of swinging. In short, anyone watching from the outside could see things weren’t going well.

In private, it appears, things were even worse.

“Shut the f—k up, you #####, f—k you”

I say the exact same thing to my cats when they wake me up early in the morning, demanding to be fed.

I guess my earlier suggestion that he bring in Jamie Moyer, Tommy John, Tom Glavine to provide some pointers for pitching without maximum velocity wouldn't have been taken well.

Some hard-A's are just hard-A's.

That intro sounds far worse than the article. The "private" is that he wouldn't listen to the DBacks' coaches (as #2 suggests). It's not like he was abusing his partner or snorting 6 lines of coke a night or screaming at his cats.

EDIT: Unclear writing sorry. The intro is an excerpt from the article, I mean the author used an attention-grabbing intro that really wasn't in line with the rest of the story ... didn't mean to imply Hombre was making it sound worse.

One of these is not like the others...

I know we've discussed this at length in the past, but the MotoX crash really seemed to assist in accelerating his decline, or am I misremembering?

On the face of it you're right. But sometimes these stories are just the tip of the iceberg and for whatever reason they do not feel they have the sources to write the entire story. I dont know if that's the case for Bumgarner or what, just that there could be more out there.

Look the story here is that (a) he apparently didn't get along with one of his bosses (Haren, the "pitching supervisor") and (b) he hasn't accepted that he will never get his stuff back. You're actually arguing it is OK to refer to that as "private ugliness"? You're OK with gullible readers believing there is genuine "private ugliness" lurking without a shred of evidence?

MadBum is the real Jack the Ripper. You can't prove otherwise.

i mean, he does look and talk like the kind of person who serial kills sex workers in his spare time.

There was and is no need for him to change. He's still getting paid. He'll change when he needs to get back on the gravy train. That's what Matt Carpenter did

And you could always tell he was trying to hide his British accent. There's probably some Appalachian My Fair Lady thing they're covering up.

I dont think they should believe anything without evidence. Just saying there could be more here than meets the eye. I dont know the guy and I hope he's a good guy in person. As you said the story itself sounds like not much, I get that.

I think the story here is that he didn't get along with ANY of his bosses, which include Brent Strom and Dan Haren, but presumably his managers and the front office couldn't do anything with him either, since the situation didn't ever improve, and he also reported to spring training out-of-shape.

I agree that when I saw "private ugliness" I read it as something much worse than fighting with his coaches. The author should use a different phrase unless he's trying to subtly hint that he's doing something unforgivable like screaming at his cats.

Does fighting with his coaches even count as ugly? I don't think there's any rule that a player has to take every suggestion anyone gives him.

The author did use a different phrase. That was Walt who used "private ugliness."

This article didn't do a great job of paraphrasing the original article from the Athletic.

If you happen to have a subscription, I suggest reading that instead.

Not in 2023. This year he reported in good shape, clearly slimmed down. (the Athletic article makes that clear) It was in 2020 when he went back to the team for "summer camp" that he was out of shape.

   18. Zach Posted: May 25, 2023 at 01:30 PM (#6130077)
#15 -- you are correct. The author used "In private, it appears, things were even worse", which I took to imply not only cat screaming but possibly even Elvis levels of peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

Yeah, you should never abuse your partner or scream at your cats. And don't let your cats snort coke, that couldn't possibly end well.

If he was only snorting 5 lines of coke a night and lost awareness of the VOLUME OF HIS VOICE when speaking to his cats, isn't that ok?
