The Yankee Death Star Is Back

The Yankees are loaded now with players of spellbinding possibility. How far will Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton hit it? Will Aroldis Chapman throw his 100 mile-an-hour fastball or his wipeout slider? How many strikeouts will Cole get tonight?

If you love the Yankees, you dream about that stuff. If you hate the Yankees, it makes you groan. Either way, you care enough to watch the game in some form, which keeps cash rolling into the Bank of Steinbrenner.

No single move can guarantee that long-awaited return to the World Series, not even a record contract for an ace in his prime. But the big, bad Yankees are back, and that is good for the game.

Mark DeRosa said this on MLB Network the other day...

"The Yankees' best pitcher -- Luis Severino -- made 3 starts last year and they won 103 games. Now imagine Severino and Cole making 60 starts between 'em."

It doesn't really mean anything, but the Yankees got exactly 60 starts from pitchers who ended up with ERA+'s worse than 100. The team went 32-28 in those games, including 20-10 in J.A. Happ's starts.

They were 71-31 in their other games, which works out to a 113-win pace.

The Yankee Death Star Is Back

The Yankees should license Darth Vader as their mascot.

That depends on which Severino shows up. Will it be the Severino with a 1.98 ERA through his first start of July of 2018, or the Severino with a 5.67 ERA after that? He's shown ace-like talent, but so far not ace-like consistency.

The Yankees also got 7 WAR out of something called a Mike Tauchmann and another thing called a Gio Urshela.

He's only 25, that's pretty normal. For Severino's career he has a 125 ERA+, and is averaging ~4 WAR per 30 GS. I'll take that. Through age 25, Cole was at 118 ERA+, and ~3 WAR per 30 GS.

Might be me, but if for some reason, you're a baseball fan who didn't think of the Yankees as the Evil Empire up to and including this year's ALCS, I seriously doubt you're going to change your mind based on the G. Cole signing.

Phrased differently, except for maybe 3 people in the lower 48 (and perhaps a guy in the Dominican and another guy in Japan), the G. Cole signing won't really move the needle.

The proven strategy against a death star is a missile up its anus ... I fully support firing a missile up the Yanks' anus.
