Theo Epstein would be perfect for Steve Cohen’s Mets

There usually is a new-owner syndrome to spend money immediately to make a mark, so do you — for example — think the agents for J.T. Realmuto, George Springer and other high-end players will wait to see what Cohen wants to do with his $14 billion even if a GM is not hired until, say, mid-November or not?

So the only question is: Does Cohen want Van Wagenen? If not, he could look into New York or New York-area-raised Mets fans like him, such as Indians GM Mike Chernoff (his first baseball job was as a $50-a-week Mets intern), Rangers GM Jon Daniels and Brewers GM David Stearns. All are qualified, with Stearns (who previously worked for the Mets) particularly intriguing and attractive.

Cohen’s hedge fund is facing a gender-discrimination suit, and to counter perceptions maybe he would like to hire the first female head of baseball operations. Yankees assistant GM Jean Afterman has never shown the desire for such a job, but if she did, this would not be a token. She is tough, smart and would have credentials as good or better than someone like Tellem.

The Mets actually have a really nice core of hitting talent right now that's pretty young. They have deGrom and don't really have a lot of bad contracts. The team has about a 124 OPS+ despite mediocre production from Alonso. This is an interesting team right now that could look pretty interesting with some moves.

The Mets could do worse than Epstein. It'd be much harder to do better than it would be to do worse.

I understand we're in Bizarroworld, but weren't the Mets ONCE AGAIN predicted to finish high in the division this year? I guess things aren't that weird.

Or they could follow several other large-budget organizations over the past decade and get someone from the Rays' front office. Erik Neander, perhaps?

Given his track record is there any team Theo wouldn't be perfect for? He's really good.

The Dodgers? I'm not pushing out Andy F to make way for Theo.

Karl Ravech suggests the Mets get Brian Cashman. But why would Cashman leave the Yankees?

Theo might just be one of those guys who should move on every 5 years.

His post WS win career doesn't look good.

His first post WS win career looked fine, when he won another WS.

he might be one of those guys that needs to move on after 5 years.

He can build them for sure.

You do remember he won two in Boston, right?

Lots of talk in Milwaukee that if the Mets call Stearns will almost certainly take the job. Which sucks but it's his career.

Reports circulating that Sandy Alderson may return in a senior, non-GM, advisory role. A possible Paul DePodesta return also reported. Can’t have too much pitching many advisors.

But why would Cashman leave the Yankees?

You're asking the wrong question. The question is why would anybody watch Karl Ravech if he suggested boring stuff like the Mets should hire Jed Hoyer?

The post-WS Cubs did win 92 (and the division) and 95 (and collapsing) in the two years after the WS. I do wonder how much warning he was given that the payroll was gonna be strictly capped -- I think probably ample in which case he probably could have planned this better, but I don't know.

Still, it's hard to complain, the team was built to be competitive for a long time. Reviving a point from yonks ago, the contracts/arb are mostly coming to a close next year but it's still a team where Rizzo and Heyward will be the oldest lineup regulars at 31 next year. Russell busted or it would still be a full starting 8 (plus Caratini, Bote and Almora) for their entire prime.

It almost makes you think that no matter how much talent you have, the baseball gods simply don't like it when you stand pat. Or maybe they don't like it when you trade away a Gleyber and an Eloy (and Cease ... but I had no major objection to either trade). And it turns out that even I wasn't skeptical enough of Schwarber.

EDIT: For the record, I won't be too surprised if Schwarber turns into Ortiz or Cruz or JDM or Bautista at some point down the line. Sure looks like all the tools to mash are there.

Exactly what I was thinking, I imagine he may not thrive on a team that will refuse to raise payroll at all, but for the most part, the guy has kicked butt as a gm, to the point that he is always going to finish on the short wanted list. It's whether he wants to move along or not. At some point in time, it might be more fun to be a Cashman/Beane/Friedman/Mozeliak type of GM and just enjoying sustained success instead of constant rebuilds.

He should hire Omar Minaya.
