HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Yankees optioned Nick Nelson, Thairo Estrada & Miguel Andujar, and called up RHP Nick Tropecano. Andujar had a great rookie season (130 OPS+), but then got hurt, opening up 3rd base for Gio Urshela, a better defender who has surprised with a first-rate bat. Andujar got a bit of time in LF this season, but struggled, and the Yankees outfield depth, including Mike Tauchman’s emergence, seems to foreclose any real playing time there, barring injury.

Despite the Red Sox struggles and the potential for the season to go down in flames . . . I remain excited each day there is a Sox game to listen to on the radio.

Sadly, today is not that day.

Rangers snatched defeat from the jaws of victory once again yesterday ... in the process, Elvis Andrus had two hits. He had started the day tied at 1,728 with Howie Kendrick and a pretty useful 1890s outfielder named Steve Brodie who played on several NL pennant winners. Andrus vaulted over Tony Cuccinello, a good-hitting 2B of the 1930s and '40s, and tied Rocky Colavito for 438th in career Hits.

One of the hits was Elvis' 300th double. That ties him with a bunch of guys ranging from Deacon McGuire to Bibb Falk, Roy White, Gregg Jefferies, and Jayson Werth. Also Jose Altuve, but I think Altuve's on an accelerated pace.

Without Jo Adell, who is out with a tight quad today.

BDC, it's great to have you back, sorry the Rangers are giving you nothing more interesting than Elvis's march up to the middle of the career leaderboards.

And yikes -- incredibly small sample, spread over bits of two years, but Andujar in his last 63 PAs: 115/127/115

I see Ohtani homered in his first AB since being ‘injured’.

Kyle Freeland has induced three double plays in six innings today. He's got six DPs on the year in 18 innings.

Man, Hunter Pence is 1 for 28 on the season. Make that 1 for 29.
   10. Walt Davis Posted: August 06, 2020 at 06:20 PM (#5968214)
Oooh ... towards the opposite end of the spectrum, White Sox rookie Luis Robert is off to a 354/415/542 start. 32-year-old Donovan Solano (SFG) is hitting 436/452/615 -- needs more walks! :-) The washed-up Cano is hitting 412/462/559 and so far the Nats are getting good Starlin Castro hitting 333 as he closes in on Elvis (just 100 behind).

There goes the Astros spotless reputation - Kent Emanuel Receives 80-Game PED Suspension:
Astros left-hander Kent Emanuel has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for the banned substance Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (DHCMT), Major League Baseball announced today.
. . .
Kent, via an MLBPA statement, claims that he does not know how “7 picograms of the long-term metabolite of DHCMT” got into his system, adding that he’s never knowingly taken the substance in question.
”Take it? I can’t even spell it!”

Bradford Doolittle, ESPN Staff Writer

While forwarding MLB's press release announcing a slew of scheduling changes, the Miami PR staff added this note: "Please note, the Miami Marlins will now conclude the 2020 regular season with 27 games over the final 23 days, which includes no off-days and four double headers in a 10-day span." ... Brutal, but that's the 2020 season for you. [emphasis added]
Might have to hang on to some of their temporary players to stagger through that stretch.

All pikers compared to the 2.092 OPS Phil Gosselin (Phils). Which is over 7x Andrew McCutchen’s.
   14. Walt Davis Posted: August 06, 2020 at 08:13 PM (#5968221)
On the pitching side, Daniel Bard is now up to 6.2 IP with 7 Ks and 0 BBs.
   15. Walt Davis Posted: August 06, 2020 at 08:16 PM (#5968222)
In their infinite wisdom, the Phils pinch-hit for Gosselin after 2 AB in today's game.
   16. Walt Davis Posted: August 06, 2020 at 08:27 PM (#5968223)
A bit of a detour on Tyler Chatwood's march to the CYA, giving up 8 runs on 11 hits in 2.1 IP although it was against the fearsome Royals. Still, 4 K, 0 BB, 11 H -- he was throwing strikes!

I think there will be a Josh Phegley appearance soon -- might as well give Willson the rest of the day off after he hits. (Caratini DHing)
   17. Where have you gone Brady Anderson? Posted: August 06, 2020 at 09:44 PM (#5968229)
Christian Yelich with an inside the park home run, thanks to some less than graceful defense by the White Sox.

some serious cherrypicking here, but for nostalgia's sake and a cool bit of info...

We remember Horace Clarke - @yankees 1965-74; @Padres 1974. Played 1,038 games at 2B from 1967-73, the most of any player in @MLB at that position. Ranked 3rd in AL in hits over that span with 1,092. In '70, broke up three no-hitters in the ninth inning within a span of 29 days.

Who finishes with a higher ERA, Chatwood or Craig Kimbrel?
   20. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: August 06, 2020 at 10:05 PM (#5968234)
Deolis Guerra, with his first ML win since 2017. He raised his career Winning PCT from .772 to .800! 87 career ERA+!

Can you name the big trade he was part of?

Is using a player not on your roster worse than sign-stealing?
An apparent roster snafu forced the Toronto Blue Jays to change their pitching plans for Thursday night's game at the Atlanta Braves. After Nate Pearson gave up three runs in five innings, manager Charlie Montoyo brought in right-hander Jacob Waguespack to open the sixth. As Waguespack walked to the mound, he was greeted by plate umpire Alan Porter, who apparently delivered some bad news: The right-hander wasn't on the 28-man active roster for the game.

The Blue Jays optioned Waguespack and infielder Santiago Espinal to the team's alternate training site on Thursday to reach the 28-man roster limit. Montoyo told reporters before the game Waguespack had been recalled when right-hander Trent Thornton was placed on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. That move apparently was not processed, leaving Waguespack off the active roster.
Embarrassing.

After sweeping the Orioles, the Marlins are undefeated since being ravaged by the coronavirus, and now have the best record in MLB.

a "true Astro"

the big club should hold a pre-game ceremony before its next game, with the players and coaches banging trash can lids in solidarity

#Astros 40-man roster pitcher @KentEmanuel,suspended by MLB for 80 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, won’t apologize for something he didn’t do: ”No,absolutely not.. and I’m never going to. I know I didn’t take it. So I’m not going to apologize for it.”

Yes, but will he file suit?

Deolis Guerra was in the Johan Santana trade to the Mets.
