MLB will eventually decide that a tripleheader of 5-inning games is perfectly OK.

Mets averted a potential collapse yesterday. Brewers are steaming to an early Sept clinch. LAD/SD/SF desperately trying to avoid play-in game. This could be the Brewers year if the chips fall correctly on playoff berths

Wait a sec. Just before the AS break you said the Brewers were gonna collapse and the Cubs should hold onto their stars.

So Tim Anderson HR'd which has inspired me to comp him and Javy

TA 2725 PA, 285/313/444, 104 OPS+, 354 BABIP, 25% K/PA, 3.6% BB/PA
JB 3035 PA, 262/302/475, 103 OPS+, 332 BABIP, 29% K/PA, 4.7% BB/PA

Javy wins handily on WAR thanks to defense but as hitters they're pretty similar. Anderson's BABIP is outstanding and he makes a bit more contact than Javy but Javy makes up for it with power. Anderson though has been a much better hitter over 2019-21 (128 OPS+ vs 103) but that's still a pretty small sample. In that time, Anderson's BABIP has jumped to 395 pushing his BA into the 320s. A 395 BABIP is "unsustainable" but he has kept it up for 1100 PA so far which is an impressive run even if it ends tomorrow. ... Javy is about 6 months older.

EDIT: I should mention Anderson's has also dropped to 21-23% the last 3 years while Javy's has gone the wrong direction.

Participating in the Home Run Derby doesn’t seem to have bothered Juan Soto - he’s hitting .538/.600/1.308 for a 1.908 OPS since the break, before tonight’s 1st inning HR. A 2nd half that resembles his 2020 season would do a lot for the Nationals.

EDIT: Soto adds a 2nd-inning double.

POSSIBLE RECORD ALERT: Birthday cyclist Trea Turner has completed the hardest part of another cycle in the 1st two innings, with a triple & HR. He’ll become the Career Cycle Leader (at age-28) if he does it. 8-0 Nationals.

the Mets have as many errors - 4 - as outs recorded so far as they trail 7-3 in the 2nd inning in Cincy.

Replace-Met SS Guillorme has 3 of them, including 2 on one play. more Keystone Kops defense.

Just tuned into Mets-Reds ... that might have been the dumbest play I've ever seen. OK not as dumb as that Pirate 1B not knowing the rules and chasing Javy all over the ballpark but who is that at SS for the Mets?

For those not watching, with men on 1&2, a grounder to SS. He turns to make the throw to third and drops the ball. So, naturally, he dives after it and swats it in the general direction of third. As swats go, it was pretty good, kinda accurate and quite strong ... strong enough to roll all the way to the dubout. That's like a 90-foot swat.

Red Sox apparently not happy with losing 2 in NY, taking it out on Toronto, up the 4th.
   11. Howie Menckel Posted: July 19, 2021 at 09:05 PM (#6029614)
Guillorme's 8th start for Mets at SS.
he has started 412 games there in the minors, though.

the spotlight seems to get to Luis - might explain his 1 RBI (!) in 87 PA this season with a .276 AVG which these days is stellar.

no outs in the 5th inning yet, and already the Mets have blown a 3-0 lead and the Reds have blown a 7-3 lead. Mets bullpen is gassed, and Reds bullpen - other than a great one-week stretch recently - is terrible.

Toronto trying to make a game of it, now down 12-3. The mighty Nick Pivetta still on the bump for the carmine hose and trying to escape the 4th with no further damage.
   13. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 19, 2021 at 09:38 PM (#6029617)
Apparently neither Trea Turner nor his manager are that interested in the Career Cycle Record, as Turner was pinch hit for in the 7th, still with ‘only’ a Triple & HR.

POSITION PLAYER PITCHING ALERT: Catcher Sandy León pitching for Marlins, greeted by Juan Soto HR. 18-0, which should be enough.
   14. JJ1986 Posted: July 19, 2021 at 09:42 PM (#6029618)
The Tigers are up 13-0 and it's not the biggest shutout of the evening.
   15. Howie Menckel Posted: July 19, 2021 at 09:48 PM (#6029619)
the Cardinals have had only one losing season in the 2000s - the 2007 team went 78-84.

and even that team was 69-69, before losing 8 straight to mostly seal their fate.

the last two times they lost 90 games was 1990 and 1978.

the 69-93 team in 1978 is their worst record since.... 1924.

so, do they ever dump?
   16. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: July 19, 2021 at 09:52 PM (#6029620)
And to think people were questioning when Soto's power would return. Last 15 games, 50+ ABs, OPSing 1.337---yikes.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: July 19, 2021 at 10:41 PM (#6029622)
Mets rally to a 9-8 lead, bottom 8, but Seth Lugo - who screwed the pooch with a 5-run 8th in the Saturday Night Massacre in Pittsburgh - throws 4 straight balls to Votto to lead off.

except the clueless home plate ump expands the definition of "a gentleman's strike" on 3-0 to absurd proportions. Votto eventually whiffs on strike 2, and Lugo survives the inning.

Mets fans all over are now donning their inflammable gear for the likely 9th with Edwin Diaz on the bump.
   18. Howie Menckel Posted: July 19, 2021 at 11:01 PM (#6029623)
Diaz walks the leadoff PH on 4 pitches. what a head case.

2 outs, runner on 2nd, and starting NL OF Winker batting with a base open and career AAAA hitter Freeman on deck.

of course the dopey Mets challenge Winker and of course Diaz allows the game-tying sinker.

first BS BS BS in a row for Diaz - utterly choking on 3 consecutive save chances at a critical period of the season for the team to assess where it stands.

one thing is obvious - they can't keep using Diaz in the big spots, and Lugo still looks rusty.

May got the SV last night, so maybe it's him.

blown leads tonight:

Mets 3-0
Reds 7-3
Reds 8-7
Mets 9-8
   19. Howie Menckel Posted: July 19, 2021 at 11:26 PM (#6029624)
blown leads tonight:

Mets 3-0
Reds 7-3
Reds 8-7
Mets 9-8
Mets 10-9

but failed former top 100 prospect Anthony Banda - called up today by the Mets - after allowing the game to be tied at 10-10 and 1st and 2nd and no one out AND a 3-0 count, gets hapless 0-for-6 Suarez to hit into a DP and then a grounder to keep it going.

the Mets may be asking their position players who wants next inning, but hey they are still alive.
   20. Hombre Brotani Posted: July 19, 2021 at 11:45 PM (#6029626)
Shohei Ohtani gave the Angels six shutout innings. Scoreless tie, 7th inning, he's replaced by a reliever. Three batters latter, it's a 3-0 deficit.

It's ####### embarrassing.
   21. Howie Menckel Posted: July 20, 2021 at 12:02 AM (#6029627)
Mets win 15-11 in extra innings.

based on pitch counts, NONE of their top 6 RPs should pitch tomorrow.

"Hey, Stroman, good luck [Tuesday] night. you're going the distance..."

I did think the brewers were going to collapse but the Cubs did instead and now the reds are and both of these after the Cards did. The brewers don’t have to ride those starters hard now - give them a turn off, bring up some AAA guys to start and keep that staff from burning out

Btw, what’s gotten into Baez - he looks like a high schools senior out there - can’t imagine a lot of teams wanting to sign up for what I just saw ?
