HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

I have seen very little evidence that David Peterson is a good major league starter.

Ke'Bryan Hayes just hit a ball that barely creeped over the right field fence and hit the base of the foul pole. The umps signaled home run. The Dodgers appealed that Hayes missed first base. The umps denied the appeal. The Dodgers requested a replay review. He not only missed first base, he didn't even come close to hitting it.

Pirates fever, catch it!

Boston down 6-0 in the 3rd to the Astros. 5 game win streak comes to a screeching halt!
   5. The Duke Posted: June 08, 2021 at 09:17 PM (#6023263)
Cards are down 3 starters and the 4th is Carlos Martinez who is giving up about 4 runs an inning lately. I’m thinking they are headed for an Arizona - like losing streak. An otherwise good team completely destroyed by pitching injuries and money issues.
   6. salvomania Posted: June 08, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6023266)
After nothing all night, and falling behind 5-0 by the fourth, the Cardinals score a run and load the bases, with two out... but the pitcher's spot is up.

The pinch-hitter they throw up there---in what could be their best, perhaps only chance to get back in the game---is batting .063 this year (1-for-16).

I know they've had some injuries, but is this the best roster this team can come up with right now?

UPDATE: The score remains 5-1.

what was that about this era not producing new breakings of major records?
this epic drama has to wait until Kelenic gets promoted again this summer, but.....

Longest hitless stretches by non-pitchers in MLB history:

Chris Davis 2018-19 - 54
Eugenio Velez 2010-11 - 46
Bill Bergen 1909 - 45
Dave Campbell 1973 - 45
Craig Counsell 2011 - 45

Jarred Kelenic 2021 - 39 and counting

As I noted in an earlier chatter, the Cardinals all well poised to set the single-season HBP record. They're over halfway to the record with more than 100 games to go.
   9. salvomania Posted: June 08, 2021 at 09:51 PM (#6023269)
If the Cardinals regress to a merely league-average HBP rate the rest of the way, they will still set the all-time single-season record, with 98 (record is 95).

(They're on pace for 130.)

Shohei Ohtani's 17th homer goes 470 feet. Wow.

Ohtani will get an error.

Let's go Giants !
   23. Walt Davis Posted: June 08, 2021 at 10:28 PM (#6023293)
Pirates 16-16 (soon 16-17) outside of their division, 7-19 within their division. The ALE is 30-13 against NLE but the Nats are 5-3 against ALE. Tigers 13-14 outside, 11-21 inside. A's 9-1 against ALC, 26-25 against everybody else. A's and Tigers are the same outside the ALC. :-)
   24. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 08, 2021 at 10:31 PM (#6023294)
Buster Posey, please retire. How awful.

Even if you hit a HR to win the game, please retire. You run like a pregnant mule.

Let's go Wilmer !

Scoring question: if he had missed second base instead, would he have been credited with a single?

That makes no sense whatsoever.

Tauchman it !

6:4 Giants.
   29. Ziggy: social distancing since 1980 Posted: June 08, 2021 at 11:04 PM (#6023303)
If you hit a line drive, round first base, and then get thrown out going into second, you get credited with a single.
   30. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 08, 2021 at 11:07 PM (#6023304)
It is called baseball, so you better touch a base.
   31. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 08, 2021 at 11:14 PM (#6023305)
Brandon Crawford, still torture to watch at bat, but defensively a GEM !
   32. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 08, 2021 at 11:26 PM (#6023308)
Yankees leading the Twins 5-3 after 8, without benefit of a run-scoring hit. Still, their 11 hits, so far, is progress of sorts.

EDIT: More progress - Gary Sanchez 2-run HR makes it 7-3, in top of 9th.

EDIT II: Miguel Andujar HR makes it 8-3.

That's a shame as I believe it means Hayes is no longer on pace to be the greatest player in history.

<i<Scoring question: if he had missed second base instead, would he have been credited with a single?</i>

That has always been my understanding.

It is called baseball, so you better touch a base.

And once he touched first base, he would have safely arrived at first base.
