HOW WILL CLEVELAND LOSE TODAY?!

i dunno for sure, but a starting OF of brad zimmer, oscar mercado and harold ramirez is a promising gambit

Look quick or you might miss it -- the DBacks have won 2 in a row for the first time since May 10-11.

The D-Back winning streak is over.

gotta love ESPN

they just had a "crawl" explaining how long the Yankees - one-hit today - had gone since the last time they collected 1 or 0 hits in a game.

turns out it's way back in .... 2019.

wow - so hadn't happened in about 145 total games in 2020-21, and some number of games in 2019 as well.

what an incredible (y stupid) stat !

Nationals off to a strong start against the Padres after beating them 15-5 yesterday - now leading 6-0, having added .44 to Yu Darvish’s ERA. Darvish pinch hit for in the 3rd.

Max Scherzer continuing his case to be added to the All-Star squad, giving up 1 hit, no BB, and striking out 5 through 3 innings.

Trea Turner’s 2nd HR of the game (also singled) makes it 8-0 Nationals. Multi-HR games probably hurt his quest for undisputed possession of the Career Cycle record.

Who had the “Brad Miller hits 3 HRs” bet tonight? You made some money.

On the other hand, if you bet on the Cubs winning today ...

Still one inning to go but over the last 13 games, the Cubs pen has given up 50 runs in 48 innings. "Interestingly," Ross has managed it "well" with the vast majority of that damage done by the AAAA/waiver shuttle -- looks like 18 innings and 35 runs (incl 3 runs to Sogard) meaning the main relievers have just been sorta normal bad at about 15 runs in 30 IP. Whoever trades for Kimbrel probably hopes he gets some work in the AS game -- he's faced 5 batters in the last 14 days.

Max Scherzer continuing his case to be added to the All-Star squad, giving up 1 hit, no BB, and striking out 5 through 3 innings.
Apologies for the inadvertent jinxing. Now 8-7, with Scherzer giving up a GS to relief pitcher Daniel Camarena, as the Nationals broadcast was second-guessing the Padres not using a pinch-hitter in the 4th inning.

Not how most would expect a Scherzer - Darvish matchup to go.

first relief pitcher to hit a grand slam since PIT's Don Robinson - who was a very good hitting pitcher IIRC - in 1985.

second pitcher ever to have his first hit be a grand slam. the first one came in 1898 - the Phillies' Bill Duggleby.

Bill won 93 games in his 8 seasons in the bigs, with 6 HR and a 31 career OPS+.

Transactions for the Pride of Utica, NY:

October 19, 1901: Jumped from the Philadelphia Phillies to the Philadelphia Athletics.

May 4, 1902: Returned to the Philadelphia Phillies by the Philadelphia Athletics after jumping teams.

for more details on how he began and ended in Utica - and his "jumping" - see the SABR bio

The Padres ultimately won the game 9-8. Epic meltdown by Scherzer and the Nationals.
