Kolten Wong sure is thriving with Milwaukee: his homer today raises his current batting line to .342/.456/.579, with a career-high walk rate and career-low strikeout rate (SSS, I know).

Good for him, I always liked the guy, and thought the Cardinals made a mistake in buying out his option and letting him go.
   4. Nasty Nate Posted: April 28, 2021 at 03:25 PM (#6015878)
WTAF, what a bush league call.
That is absolutely insane.

Holy crap, that's ridiculous.

WTAF, what a bush league call.

If the ump wanted to be a pedant, shouldn't he have called the runner out for interference since he was running in fair territory? This call seems to be both ridiculous and wrong.

If the ump wanted to be a pedant, shouldn't he have called the runner out for interference since he was running in fair territory?
I think that would have been just as wrong, but at least the end result would have been appropriate. Both the runner and the fielders were in legal places at all times as far as I can tell.
   8. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 28, 2021 at 04:06 PM (#6015894)
That's just astoundingly arrogant umpiring.
   9. Random Transaction Generator Posted: April 28, 2021 at 04:44 PM (#6015905)
I'm almost positive that earlier this month a runner was declared "out" for running in that exact same spot when a pitcher threw a ball to first base and clipped him.

This is probably the most egregious "ump show" call I've seen in a while.

Logan Allen has been optioned to the Alternate Site.

WTAF, what a bush league call.

Amazingly bad and bizarre. And the umps didn't get together and correct it.

   12. JJ1986 Posted: April 28, 2021 at 06:40 PM (#6015936)
It's deGrom o'clock.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 07:56 PM (#6015946)
Carlson really does look like a potential all star right now, meaning he is just hitting line drives left and right, maybe no homeruns, but he's become an average, obp and extra base hitter. (driving the ball opposite field has become his bread and butter)
   14. JJ1986 Posted: April 28, 2021 at 07:57 PM (#6015947)
A mediocre deGrom has K'd 5 and given up 1 run through 4.
   15. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:03 PM (#6015948)
Red Sox have their 1 run against deGrom, need to go for the shutout unless they can get deGrom out after the 7th, though at just 50 odd pitches through 4, it looks like he's going the distance...
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:08 PM (#6015951)
I'm glad that Jim Edmonds has started to study the numbers, his last broadcast he appeared to be a McCarver level of Curmudgeon, so glad to see him at least evolving a bit. (mind you, the backlash he had about a few of his comments in his last couple of broadcasts, probably forced a change)
   17. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:09 PM (#6015952)
And the "call" in link 2 is astoundingly poor. Runner has no chance to beat play. Runner has a lane to run into when there are plays like this and runner is still in infield. Fielder never steps off the field of play, is entitled to make the the play and never goes into the running lane or impeded runner as it is anyway.

Ump should be fired after the game as the call is probably the worst I've ever seen. It's that bad.
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:12 PM (#6015953)
A guy who used to be my "mancrush" McCutchen, has the second most plate appearances among active players against the Cardinals (Votto is of course number one) ... walks because the Cardinal pitcher can't find the strike zone.

Cardinal announcers made a joke, the Phillies are trying to find a center fielder (9 out of 15 teams get better offensive production than the Phillies from their pitcher than the Phillies centerfielders) and Edmonds said "I'll do it, but I just can't anymore." (it was funny the way he said it)

   19. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:15 PM (#6015954)
and deGrom strikes out the side in the 5th.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:15 PM (#6015955)
Popular Mechanics did a ranking of MLB stadiums, and listed Busch as 8th, and they were approaching it from an architectural point of view. And their argument is the view of the arch being very important. (Of course Pittsburgh was number one in their list)

I mention that because they just did a great shot of where you can see the arch from plate.

Dang, our 6th pitcher, who isn't quite major league ready, is struggling.... shocked I tell you.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:18 PM (#6015956)
The scouting report against Oviedo has to be, hit the ball opposite way, as the Phillies batters are almost exclusively intentionally stabbing the ball away.
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:27 PM (#6015957)
That thing left in a freaking hurry... not really sure I've seen a ball go over the fence faster than that. O'Neil with a two run homerun.
   23. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:27 PM (#6015958)
and Pivetta gets through 5 unscathed. Sox still up 1-0

How is Pittsburgh ranked higher then? You can't see the arch at all from anywhere in PNC!
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:42 PM (#6015961)
His decision on where to throw the ball might be off, but Justin Williams has been a solid catcher when the ball is hit into the outfield.

They mentioned how important Roberto Clemente is to the stadium and how they made a big deal of making sure that his influence was felt on the stadium.

The importance of their rankings was about incorporating everything that is important structurally to the area.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 08:49 PM (#6015963)
Goldy showing up tonight, Edmonds declared him as the guy who he thinks is about to heat up earlier in the broadcast.

Mets take out deGrom after 6 on 93 pitches, time for the Red Sox to add some runs.

That one took a while to translate but it's better as the insult it reads like.

Joe Maddon pulls Alex Cobb after just two innings, 3 runs allowed, and 51 pitches. No game for the Angels tomorrow, so I guess it's a bullpen day, and Joe just really wants to win this game.

The thing about Justin Williams, is he's a fantastic defensive outfielder, when the goal is to catch the ball, he's not such a great outfielder when the goal is to do something with the ball after he catches it.

Edit: at least by his actions this season, he's twice thrown to the wrong base and has also made a couple of really poor (but strong) throws... He needs to learn to gather his thought process when he plays.
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:21 PM (#6015974)
Dang it, Phils tie it up. Didn't really expect this game to end up 3-1..

did you see the call in post #2, terrible is an improvement over that call. Nothing that can happen going forward is worse than that play.

Yep, Cubs getting shellacked (Hendricks) so let's focus on the continuing curiosity of the Cubs' pitchers' hitting. They are now 2-35 with 25 Ks.

At least the offense seems to be breaking out of its slump. We're all the way up to 4 hits and we're only through the 6th!
   44. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:39 PM (#6015988)
Jacob deGrom could murder the Mets lineup and no jury would convict him.

Has anyone else noticed that when teams have two players with the same last name, they very rarely put the first initials on the backs of their jerseys anymore? I wonder why.
   46. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6015990)
Cardinal pitchers are beaning batters.. .Harper hit in the face with a pitch, his nose is bleeding and he left the game immediately.
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:41 PM (#6015991)
Cabrera has hit two batters on two pitches....

Going to double windows... can the Cards pull off another win (even with Shildt!?)? Will the A's make a comeback from behind ?
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:44 PM (#6015994)
Cabrera has no business being on the mound right now, no clue on where his pitch is going, and this is the poster boy of the reason why the 3 batter minimum makes no sense.

literally 4 pitches... 2 hit batters, a ball in the dirt, and then a single...
   50. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:44 PM (#6015995)
McCucheon !

deGrom, 5 GS, 59K, .51 ERA, .57WHIP...record 2-2. WTF Mets batsman. How often can this guy get shafted by his own offense?

If he were on the Dodgers the last 7 years, he'd be like 115-35. I know wins aren't reflective of skill, but geez they are nice to have when you actually pitch well enough to earn them.

   52. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:47 PM (#6015997)

count me as among those who are mystified by that collective umpire brain cramp in #2.

meanwhile, cabrera hits harper in the face with a pitch then plunks the next guy on the next pitch, obviously a ball that got away. girardi comes out to yell at people, backing up his guys, shildt does a little chirping back.

odd goings on ...
   55. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:49 PM (#6016000)
Whoah! Rizzo takes the mound! Ok, I’ll keep watching.

Bryce Harper ok ? Face-hits are not fun ...

He was bleeding from his nose, so not sure, it was a relatively mild hit if you look at it, but it still was a face hit (he was bleeding on the opposite side of what he faced the pitcher, the ball deflected off the bill of his helmet to the opposite side of his face)
   57. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:51 PM (#6016003)

At which point Ross goes to Matt Duffy to face the righty. Manager can’t not manager.

You’ve been railing about this mythical inning for two years, and it finally happened! I’m happy for you! ;)

I've been railing on limiting managers choices. To be honest even in this situation there was no chance that the manager would have had a chance to pull Cabrera even though it was obvious he shouldn't be in there, simply because if they didn't have someone warming up at the same time, there is no chance that they would have pulled Cabrera even after the second hit batter, because they would not have had anyone to replace him.

But the rules created the concept of not bothering to prep a backup early.

I hate this rule, as it really doesn't change much historically, we've pointed it out time and time again, mid inning pitching changes aren't really as frequent as people think it happens. (if you remove September baseball from the equation)
   63. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 28, 2021 at 09:56 PM (#6016009)

easy play, crappy throw from Carlson.

Cardinal announcers "throw not on time"... throw was plenty on time, it was horrifically off target... without changing a thing other than where it lands, he gets the runner easily.

Harrison Bader is coming back and there is no spot for Carpenter after that, it's either him or Hurst that gets sent down.

Carp isn’t done yet. He had a good pinch hit appearance the other night. I think he could be an excellent pinch hitter. He should never, ever start a game
   83. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 28, 2021 at 10:31 PM (#6016038)
I think I have the Phillies feed, they are talking crazy stuff. Way beyond intelligent.
   84. The Duke Posted: April 28, 2021 at 10:32 PM (#6016039)
Cabrera had to be left in due to three batter rule. Seems Shildt could have asked the ump to toss him.

5:3 game, get the hitter.

Typical idiotisms.

Philadelphia is so dumb, for real.
   87. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 10:33 PM (#6016042)
The thing is that it's gotten to the point that Carpenter has to produce or get left behind, with Hurst you have at least a defensive outfielder, when Bader comes back, that might not be as important. With Dean, he's at least hitting enough to be a pinch hitter.. Carpenter's career is over within a few days if he doesn't show something, that much is obvious to every fan of the Cardinals and even fans of Carpenter... he needs a hit or two or at least a sacrifice rbi....

The team has more or less stated that they have to move on if he doesn't produce.
   88. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 28, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6016044)

   89. The Duke Posted: April 28, 2021 at 10:35 PM (#6016045)
Another good pinch hit appearance by Carp. My only issue is he shouldn’t be used with bases empty which maximizes the shift. He needs to pinch hit with a runners on
   90. cardsfanboy Posted: April 28, 2021 at 10:37 PM (#6016046)

I support a DFA just to see if someone takes his Salary from us. But if not, I’d keep him on bench. He can play three positions, he takes walks.

damn, and he came back with that low pitch....

I'll state that I absolutely think Carpenter has something in the tank, I'll almost always think that players with (baseball) iq will always have more in the tank than others think... the issue is that if you have Carpenter on the bench, you might feel more likely to use him than you really should, due to organizational obligation or history.

The issue is, what is the best 25 men we can put on the roster, and I'm not sure that Carpenter makes that list.

   94. The Duke Posted: April 28, 2021 at 10:50 PM (#6016053)
They are a .500 team. And swapping out a bench player ain’t gonna change that. As log as they don’t start him I’m fine with them sitting him at the end of the bench.

I think calling them a .500 team is a bit too pessimistic, simply based upon what our starting staff has shown over the past week, means that there is a real possibility of an upper echelon pitching staff when Mikolas comes back, and all we need is the offense and defense to show up as expected (and when you have Dylan Carlson performing at the level he has shown since pretty much the second half of last season, you have to almost like our offense to be above average also)

In theory, the Cardinals can be an upper echelon team going forward, the .500 is based upon a bad few performances.

Seven shutout relief innings from the Angels bullpen! I'm shocked and awed!

I wasted a fantasy pre-season pick on Josh Staumont, based on his stuff and my observations.
KC went another way, with Greg Holland, and there was talk of Wade Davis and Scott somebody.
But they seem to have come around. Staumont with his 3rd save tonight for KC.

I think expecting anything useful out of Mikolas this year is really optimistic. Not impossible, of course, but he’s such a huge question mark in multiple ways that the smart money is on the under.
