This year’s World Series is 2nd-least watched on TV

The Houston Astros’ six-game victory over the Philadelphia Phillies finished as the second least-watched World Series on television.

The six games averaged 11,784,000 on Fox, down 1.3% from the 11,940,000 for the Atlanta Braves’ six-game win over the Astros last year and ahead of only the 9,946,000 for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ six-game victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in 2020.

Houston’s 3-1 win in Game 6 on Saturday night was seen by 12,549,000 viewers on Fox, down 11% from 14,140,000 Atlanta’s 7-0 victory over the Astros in last year’s finale, played on a Tuesday night. Including Fox Deportes and streaming, this year’s Game 6 was viewed by 12,871,000.

Game 6 was played opposite several college football games, including Alabama-LSU on ESPN, Clemson-Notre Dame on NBC and Florida State-Miami on ABC.

The Series finished with a 6.1 Nielsen rating and 17 share. The rating was the second-lowest behind the 5.2 for 2020, which had a 12 share. This year’s share marked a 1% increase from last year.

Thursday night game vs. NFL. Saturday night finale against CFB. And the dreaded cheaters.

I'm just one data point, but I watched most of the World Series - and the playoffs in general - streaming on a phone or laptop.

It had more viewers than the first 50 or so World Series.

I was surprised that game 6 had only ~300k watching on Fox Desportes or streaming. I would have guessed a team in Houston would have had a good number watching on Fox Desportes.

More context around the Game 6 numbers:

On OTA TV networks alone, it was BY FAR the most watched primetime show. The next most watched was SNL, with 4.3 million viewers. Third was Clemson vs. Notre Dame on NBC, opposite the World Series, which had 3.2 million viewers. On cable nothing came close to the World Series, either: Alabama vs. LSU had 7.5 million viewers, or a little more than half of the World Series audience. No other cable show, on any network or at any time of day, had more than 3 million viewers.

Also, the numbers given in the excerpt suggest Fox Deportes and streaming combined for 320k viewers. But Fox Deportes was reported as having 320k viewers, and streaming numbers were not reported AFAICT. It's possible viewership was higher than the excerpt suggests.

Nobody watches baseball, driving recrod revenues.

I have trouble watching - just too slow. I keep tabs on my phone and tune in when something starts to happen

If one viewed the World Series on Fox via AppleTV/Fubo on a television, is that counted as streaming?

Well, at least MLB was spared the embarrassment of the deciding game of its showcase event losing in the ratings to a regular-season NFL game.

I guess baseball needs more replay, 20 teams in the playoffs, and ghost runners every inning.

Is there anything we might call "TV" that more people are watching than they used to? (i.e not including TikTok) What's going on with video game sales? With facebook and twitter plunging in value and shedding employees, newspapers still dying, etc. ... is it simply a "post-media" world whatever that means?

If current trends continue, in 20 years the only forms of entertainment will be vinyl LPs, hallucinogenic mushrooms and sock puppets. Try all three at once -- it's great.
