Tiger Woods vouches for John Smoltz’s golf game

But not a word about Jeff Lahti’s bump & run…

When asked on Wednesday about John Smoltz playing in a Nationwide event at the beginning of May, Tiger Woods kind of snickered. But he quickly set the record straight about the former Major League Baseball pitcher.

“Smoltzy? Well, I had not ever played with an amateur that had ever shot the scores he shot,” Woods said of his friend, who played the longest stint of his baseball career in Atlanta. “He is a hell of an athlete. He can play basketball. Obviously he was an incredible pitcher. But I think just the way he is able to take that same tenacity into golf is amazing.

“I’ve gone out there with him when he’s shot 69-67 in the same day … so it’s pretty phenomenal.”

Smoltz does need to work on having sex with waitresses in Perkins employee bathrooms, however.

I don't think Smoltz would go in for that type of debauchery - it's a slippery slope, and at the bottom you'll surely find people marrying animals.

Ichiro! could shoot a 1 if he really wanted to.

I wonder if Smoltz actually asks people to call him "Smoltzy". How does one grown man meeting another grown man at some point in time end up calling the other by their last name and with an "y" or "ie" at the end?

Wasn't John Smoltz one of the guys that played a round with Tiger Woods and the young woman who was thought to be a golfing phenom at the time and good enough to play in the men's circuit? I believe Smoltz soundly beat her at the time.

Soundly would be pushing it.

What was their relationship like? Were they bantering back and forth?

Yeah. What it basically boiled down to: I was really trying to compete hard against Annika. And on the first tee Tiger said, "I'll bet she beats you." We all played from the same tees. And she was super nice. And she was probably a little nervous because that was her first time playing with him. My whole focus was that he threw the gauntlet out. And I did it, I won. And I didn't say a word. And there was more stuff written about that round in the following weeks. It was like my whole career paled in comparison to that one event. The next time I played her, she kicked my butt [Laughs.] And she let me know about it too. [Laughs.]

Smoltz has had some variety of varmint living on his face for the last twenty years, so I think he'd be cool with it.
