Tigers sign Edwin Jackson to a minor league deal

The good news: most-traveled-player ever Edwin Jackson has a job again. The bad news: it’s not with team number 15. He’s repeating himself, going back to the Tigers, for whom he pitched in 2009. Oh well.

If Edwin Jackson were any more peripatetic, he’d be engaging in discourses on Aristotle in his spare time.

Jackson was awful this year and looks to be done. He's quite a bit short of a HOF career, but I suppose there's a 1 in 100 million chance that he masters the knuckleball and runs off 10 straight 20 win seasons to get over 300. But no team signs him to a long term deal because they all figure "how long can this last?" and he's often traded to contenders at the deadline. So he plays for another 12-13 teams that he hasn't played for yet.

When he gets to Cooperstown, instead of listing the teams he played for, instead they just list the 2-3 teams he did not play for.

So you are saying there will be expansion after he retires?

Noooooo, he should be signing with teams he hasn't played with before!

Had the same thought after reading the headline. What a waste!

Didn't he have almost his best season last year?

...Yes, he did. Well, good stats but in only 92 innings.

Detroit is the site of his greatest success. He was one of the 2009 Tigers' 4 All-Stars (who could forget Brandon Inge and his 0fer in the Home Run Derby?). Time to recapture that magic. Also, bring back Brandon Inge.

After that season, the Tigers sent him to Arizona for Max Scherzer as part of a blockbuster 3-team trade:
December 8, 2009: Traded as part of a 3-team trade by the Detroit Tigers to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Detroit Tigers sent Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees. The New York Yankees sent Phil Coke and Austin Jackson to the Detroit Tigers. The New York Yankees sent Ian Kennedy to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Arizona Diamondbacks sent Max Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth to the Detroit Tigers.

Definitely a blockbuster trade. Everyone in that trade spent at least 9 years in the majors except Daniel Schlereth. 4 out of 7 are still active ten years later!

Tigers 30 - 65 .316
Orioles 31 - 68 .313
Signing Jackson is just tanking insurance in case the current roster plays a little too well.

... and Phil Coke broke Cy Young's career wins record.

Haha, I had the same reaction as [3] and [4].

and Schlereth's father, Mark, played 12 seasons in the NFL and was a starting guard on three Super Bowl winners.

I forgot about Daniel Schlereth. I take it he hurt his arm and never came back?

Wow. Since his last big league game, he's been with nine organizations, most recently the Red Sox earlier this year. He's now pitching independent league ball. He's become a minor league version of his former trade partner.
