Tigers sign Spencer Torkelson to record-setting bonus

The Detroit Tigers have signed No. 1 overall draft pick Spencer Torkelson to a record-setting bonus.

The Arizona State first baseman signed for $8,416,300, according to MLB.com’s Jim Callis.

That’s the largest bonus for a draft pick since Major League Baseball began using bonus pools.

The bonus was exactly $1,000 more than the slot value for the No. 1 pick, perhaps a symbolic statement from Torkelson’s agent, Scott Boras, to ensure that his client was paid “over slot.”

Man, if ever a guy needed a nickname... How about we all just call him "Spike"? Spike Torkelson. Can I get a second from the floor?

He already has one, and it's..."Tork."

In case anyone ever wonders why people find Boras insufferable.

I mean, I guess it's better than "Torkey."

I'd go with "Spork."

Too bad he’s limited to 1B.... if he has more position flexibility, he could be Spork.

Curse you!!!!!

'Tis tradition -- Peter Thorkelson became Peter Tork (the Monkees).

They announced him as a 3B on draft day. Wonder if he’ll get to play for the Tigers this year. On the plus side for him, its not like they have better options. On the downside, service time.

S-Tork!

They might stick him on the taxi squad at least, otherwise I don't know if he'll be seeing any live action this year. In addition to possibly legit baseball reasons (if they really want him to stick at 3B) and the usual service time shenanigans, if there's little/no fan-generated revenue then there's no financial reason to bring him up to help keep the fans coming out in Sept.

“Turkey” Torkelson sounds like an old-time ballplayer. If only he was a former prison guard, “Turnkey” Torkelson would work.

It's well established that third basemen do need extra time to work on their defense.

The Brewers announced Ryan Braun would play 3B a decade and a half ago, too... He could well be another Miguel Cabrera, too bad they're playing the husk of the real one for another 99 years - but I doubt Spork plays 3B.

I'd go with "Spork."

Hunter Pence would call him "Foon".

While he never actually played the position, he did stand there for his rookie season and often booted ground balls hit in his direction.

Spencer, son of Tork.

If you're gonna go with that, it's gotta be spelled "Torque". Otherwise, they're gonna call him "Tork the Dork".

Actually, I kinda like "Torch", both for what he does to the opposing pitchers and for being a beacon of hope for the Tigers.

What's the status on Hunter Pence? Didnt he make it back to MLB last year?

Lord have mercy, people. Tork Chop. Close the thread. It's settled. Detroit get on board. Tork Chop smokes one to deep left... C'mon now. You know this is it.

Spork Torkelson is a pretty great nickname. Right up there with "Eyechart" Gwosdz.
