Tipster leaks evidence alleging Yankees used camera to steal signs in 2018 playoffs

In the midst of a shortened season in a pandemic, the Yankees could be facing similar allegations to that of the Houston Astros from the 2017 postseason. Per an anonymous tip, the Yankees had an ‘eye in the sky’, if you will, in the stands to steal signs.

Take with that video what you will, but should any of said allegations against the Yankees prove to be true, it would expose an astounding level of hypocrisy in the Bronx. New York had been one of the more outspoken ball-clubs against the illegal actions committed by the Astros in their 2017 World Series-winning season.

Is there any reason to think that this is for real-time sign stealing and not just recording signs to analyze later?

That’s not exactly the hottest smoking gun I’ve ever seen.

I mean I’m one who thinks every team is engaging in this kind of stuff so it won’t shock me if it is what it claims to be but this is about as far from incriminating as you can get.

Is there a way to play that video so you can actually see anything?

MLB already viewed that video and cleared it (in their investigation of sign-stealing allegations).

This may very well be nothing, but even if it's something, it will be nothing.

In Schwab's twitter feed, he notes that the NYY home OPS was 10 percent higher as supporting evidence. Certainly wasn't a matter of building a team for the stadium, nobody does that.

Another thing the Yankees suck at because the teams that are good at cheating won the WS in 2017 and 2018....

Seems dubious but I'll wait for MuttsIdolCochrane to weigh in, he's pretty deeply sourced in the commissioner's office.

The true story behind the Yankees' 'cheating' video

According to officials with direct knowledge of the situation, that video was investigated by Major League Baseball on two separate occasions: 2018, when the Astros complained about it, and late 2019, when then-GM Jeff Luhnow raised it again.

Those investigations -- in which the Yankees eagerly cooperated -- included interviews, examinations of internal text and email exchanges, and an inspection of the camera operator’s phone. On both occasions, MLB was entirely convinced that the video did not show illegal activity.

A person with direct knowledge of those investigations told SNY that they are “100 percent certain” the video that surfaced this week on Twitter was the same one already cleared twice by the league.

That means that it was definitively not shot during the 2018 postseason.....

Crucially, the league’s department of investigations, led by Bryan Seeley, looked at the intern’s phone and determined that he had not in fact been texting at all. The DOI report says that he was writing pitches in a notes App-type feature, in part because the screen was freezing and he was concerned that the pitches weren’t all being recorded. He was not communicating in real time with anyone else in the organization.

The DOI report, according to a person with direct knowledge of it, says that he was “zooming in on [catcher’s] glove because the pitcher’s release point was in the same sight.”

Some of the backstory is already known to the public. In late May of 2018, the Yankees received approval from Major League Baseball to test a high-speed camera (a Fastec, which some less tech-savvy baseball people refer to as an Edgertronic, another type of high-speed camera) that would help their own players improve by taking images of them at more than 1,000 frames per second.

Not knowing if they would ultimately purchase the expensive camera, the Yankees did not want to mount it, so they assigned an intern to operate it in the outfield. During the May 28-30 series against Houston, then-Astros senior director of baseball operations GM Brandon Taubman approached the intern and asked if he was stealing signs. Taubman shot video of the incident.
