Apparently Anthony Rizzo, cancer survivor, is one of the Cubs who will not get vaccinated. Disappointing.

This game is going south quickly.

Shildt with the patented “got to keep him in to get him the win” move which will cost us the game. Now he goes to bullpen after frittering away a 5-1 lead

What an at-bat by Rizzo.

Jason Schmidt and to a lesser extent Bronson Arroyo had good careers, just not until after they left Pittsburgh.

Max Scherzer leaves the game after 1 out in 1st inning. Possibly some kind of back or leg injury based on his movements. Not good at anytime, but probably made worse by Nationals having a day-night doubleheader tomorrow.
   11. Howie Menckel Posted: June 11, 2021 at 07:18 PM (#6023834)
deGrom entered tonight's game having thrown 121 pitches of 100+ miles per hour this season.
the runnerup has..... 10.

he also completed a perfect game of sorts: by whiffing Tatis for the second out (after whiffing Pham for the first), Jake at that point has retired 27 straight batters in the first innings of his starts.

Does anyone need to grow a thick beard more than Blake Snell does?
   13. Howie Menckel Posted: June 11, 2021 at 08:23 PM (#6023842)
06.11... Max Scherzer was removed from Friday's start against the Giants in the first inning due to an apparent injury.
Spin: Ugh. The right-hander threw just 12 pitches in this one before being visited by the team trainer and eventually removed after throwing a warm up pitch. It's unclear exactly what the issue is, but Scherzer was seen going down to a squat and wincing in pain before the trainer and manager Dave Martinez rushed out. Expect the Nationals to provide an update on his status as soon as one becomes available.

Well, no. The Nationals have a ‘policy’ of not commenting, or proving an update, on player injuries until after the game. As is often the case when something is justified as ‘policy’, it’s a stupid practice, but there’s no indication they are rethinking it.

They're chanting MVP in Queens.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: June 11, 2021 at 08:56 PM (#6023846)
deGrom retires the first 13 batters before allowing a single (erased on a CS).

1-0 in 5th, deGrom up - and yes, that chant.
1st and 2nd, none out.

deGrom squares to bunt even before Snell throws a pitch - and the crowd groans, lol.
then deGrom pulls back and swings and misses, crowd pleased at the effort.

Padres call for a pickoff try at second - with the pitcher batting! Snell brain farts and is about to toss to first (which makes no sense) and of course there is no one home so it's a balk.

then deGrom laces a single to left to score a pair of runners. Snell had allowed lefties just a .115 AVG this season - but MVP doesn't care what mere mortals do.

now hitting .400 this season with 5 RBI.

iirc, he has allowed ONE hit with a runner in scoring position in 2021 while getting FOUR himself.

a friend noted that his teenage son wants to know why he can't subscribe to a deGrom channel so he can watch him whenever he performs - like the kid does with pop stars, apparently. it's an idea.
   18. Howie Menckel Posted: June 11, 2021 at 09:14 PM (#6023851)
deGrom - who left his previous start after just 85 pitches in 7 innings - will depart this one after 6 innings and 80 pitches.

Mets announcers note that in the last he told his MGR he was "tired," and in this one he talked calmly to the trainer before heading into the locker room with Mets up 3-0.

tonight begins a stretch of 33 games in 31 days for the Mets - 23 of those in Queens and 3 more in The Bronx - as they try to begin catching up on a half-dozen or so games shy they are of a typical team.

hey if I'm the MGR and deGrom tells me to jump - I say, "How high?"

MLB Network citing SNY for report that deGrom left after the 6th inning due to right flexor hand tendinitis. I’d want more information before self-immolating, but I’m not a Mets fan.
   20. Howie Menckel Posted: June 11, 2021 at 09:59 PM (#6023861)
it's a finger injury - not as bad as a shoulder or elbow, not as good as... a stiff neck? a hairball?
   21. The Duke Posted: June 11, 2021 at 09:59 PM (#6023862)
That’s not the type of diagnosis that you make 30 minutes after leaving game so this must be a longer term issue
   22. Howie Menckel Posted: June 11, 2021 at 10:20 PM (#6023864)
I dunno - doesn't sound like a complicated diagnosis but my nephew is a doctor, not me.

Mets win a 3-2 thriller, first time they have been able to have 30,000 fans at Citi Field since COVID. our own Dave "Inge" was on hand to boot.

Edwin Diaz now comes into games to mariachi band music - crowd loves it, and he says it inspires him. all is forgiven for 2019, Edwin!

("Narco" by Blasterjaxx and Timmy Trumpet, if you're scoring at home.)

The injury to a multiple Cy Young Award winner doesn’t look so bad, Max Scherzer is day-to-day with groin inflammation:
Scherzer offered a positive update postgame, telling reporters (including Jessica Camerato of he suffered a mild groin injury. Scherzer said an MRI revealed inflammation but no muscle strain and termed himself day-to-day.
Sound like he might miss a start, at worst, but who knows.
   24. Howie Menckel Posted: June 11, 2021 at 10:52 PM (#6023867)
just caught up with deGrom's post-game interview on their SNY network, and - well, anyone who likes to try to get inside the brain of a brilliant artist, in this case a baseball player, it's well worth searching for.

summary: this is 'elbow' and not 'finger' but deGrom said he knows that people panic over that (not to mention occasional instances of self-immolation, I'll add).

he said just after he was drafted, he tried to pitch with a bad elbow, and he knows how that came out. says he felt a little something right after his last start, but was glad it didn't get any worse so he was good to go.

was mostly "only" hitting 99 mph on his fastball tonight, but he said throwing fewer of those was more from how he expected the Padres to change their approach. he said Pham had only swing at 2 first pitches of a game in his entire career, so that was the tipoff right there.

trainers did some basic tests on the ligaments just after the game, and he said things checked out fine. he hopes to make his next start, in fact.

deGrom has struck out 34 batters for every earned run he's given up in 2021.
   26. The Yankee Clapper Posted: June 11, 2021 at 11:40 PM (#6023871)
The game is yet to be decided, but should the Angels lose, an inning in which Ohtani gave up 2 runs on a HBP, BB, two balks, and a strikeout in which the batter reached on a WP, may have something to do with it. Not sure how LA Hombre can take it.
   27. Hombre Brotani Posted: June 12, 2021 at 12:07 AM (#6023872)
The two balks were both bullshit. The TV crews were mystified as to what Ohtani did to draw a call, and they went over the video like it was the Zapruder film. First call, he claimed Ohtani didn't step off the rubber, and he clearly did. Second time, he said Ohtani didn't come set before pitching, and he did. The video was very clear on both. The home plate umpire basically forced Ohtani out of the game and into the bullpen, and the bullpen predictably blew it.

Yes I was at Citi Field for the Mets game last night. Awesome atmosphere. Wasn’t a full stadium but must have been pretty close to the 33k capacity. Clearly more people than some of the food vendors were prepared for, as some of them were running out of certain items in the 5th inning.

Spin rates down across the board last week. Overall 0.3 Bauer units per fastball.
