Tommy Pham continues hot start to Boston Red Sox career with dramatic walk-off: ‘We don’t get paid for overtime,’ he says

As Tommy Pham stepped to the plate in the 10th inning against reliever Lou Trivino, his mindset was simple. He had enjoyed his first taste of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry but wanted the game to be over.

So Pham, who was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts before the 10th, laced a hard grounder down the third-base line, plating automatic runner Christian Arroyo and giving the Red Sox a 3-2 walk-off win over their first-place rivals. Mission accomplished.

“End it. We don’t get paid for overtime,” Pham told NESN’s Jahmai Webster when asked about his mindset in the 10th. “End it.”

Pham’s third career walk-off hit capped off a dramatic victory for the Red Sox, who trailed all game until Yankees closer Clay Holmes walked two batters to lead off the ninth and J.D. Martinez tied the game with an RBI single up the middle. In the 10th, Arroyo advanced to third when Jaylin Davis tapped out to Trivino then failed to score when Reese McGuire bunted on his own for a hit. With one out, Pham got a 2-0 sinker and shot it 101.7 mph by the third base bag to clinch the win.

Isn't Musial alleged to have said this during an extra innings all star game??

They also don't get paid extra if the game goes four hours instead of three, but somehow that hasn't worked to get these guys working faster.

I thought it was Grover Alexander. BILL james did a tracer on it. Alexander told his teammates his wife had fried chicken waiting so he was gonna hit a HR. Which he did. No mention of beer and video games

Nicely timed post with Tommy going 3 for 4 today.

Compared to Jackie Bradley, Jr., Tommy Pham looks like Stan Musial.

I believe it was Luis Aponte whose wife threw all his stuff out of their apartment the night of the 33 inning game (well the first 32 of it) because she wouldn’t believe the game had gone that long.

Under 2 1/2 hours tonight!

As to the Stan Musial comparison, never mind being as good, not going to happen. Be as lucky. I remember reading a story about the Cardinals team plane in the late 1950's or early 1960's going through a scary storm and one of the players on edge looking to another who was completely calm and asking him how he could be so relaxed. And that player supposedly pointed to Musial several seats away and said "No plane with Stan Musial on it is ever going down."

Stan was the GM of the team for one year. 1967. He took over they won the championship. He decided he didn't really like the job.

Good line from Pham. I've never heard that before.
