Toronto Blue Jays’ Alek Manoah suspended five games for throwing at Baltimore Orioles’ Maikel Franco

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah has been suspended five games and fined for throwing at Baltimore Orioles third baseman Maikel Franco on Saturday and triggering a benches-clearing altercation, MLB senior vice president for on-field operations Michael Hill announced Tuesday.

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo also received and will serve a one-game suspension Tuesday when Toronto plays at Miami. Manoah is appealing his suspension.

Manoah was ejected from Saturday’s game for hitting Franco after surrendering back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning. After allowing a two-run homer to Ryan Mountcastle and a solo homer to DJ Stewart, Manoah plunked Franco on the first pitch, prompting the benches and bullpens to empty, though no punches were thrown. Once the situation cooled down, the umpires conferred and ejected Manoah.

The 24-year-old Manoah said he threw several sliders to Franco in an earlier at-bat and shook off a sign for another, opting instead for a fastball. He said he was told by the umpires that his ejection stemmed from “bad timing.”

I think we can all agree that intentionally throwing at the batter on the first pitch after two guys have just hit homeruns off you is, indeed, "bad timing".

Assuming that you want to stay in the game.

Seems like gross overkill by the league. Many would argue that he shouldn't have been ejected at that moment as it didn't happen until after the brawl and the umps yakked among themselves. How many times have we seen guys throw on purpose at hitters and it was obvious but nothing was called? Countless times. Guess being a rookie didn't help.

Manoah is a SP so a "5-game" suspension only serves to push his next start back by one game. So not gross overkill, it barely even qualifies as a 1-game suspension and is standard practice for a SP. If he'd been a reliever, he'd have probably gotten "only" 3 games, reduced to 2 on appeal with it nearly certain he wouldn't have pitched more than 1 of those 2 days anyway. It of course stinks from a pocket-book perspective as he loses 5 games of pay, not the 1 game that he deserves. Not worth a big fuss but surely this is something the union should clean up, allow a two-pronged punishment of "can't appear in the next 5 games and surrenders 1 game's pay" while a position player would get "can't appear in the next game and surrenders 1 game's pay."
